Comparison: MacBook Pro vs Surface Book

Microsoft announced their own laptop, Surface Book, the other day and everyone was surprised to see the tech-giant giving its own take on Windows notebook. How does it stack up against one of its tough competitor, the Apple MacBook Pro, specifically the 13″ Retina version? Here’s our comparison of the two.

First, let’s see how each other is different in terms of their key specifications:

Starts at $1,499 (Around ₱70,000)₱64,990

Evidently, the Surface Book and MacBook Pro share a lot in common. They are both thin and light, have high-resolution displays, Intel processors (Apple will soon update to 6th-Gen), capable graphics and long battery life.

Perhaps the major difference between the two is their operating system. Of course, Surface runs Window 10 while the MacBook Pro has OS X El Capitan. Although, the latter can also run Windows 10 if your want to. What the MacBook Pro can’t do for you is to become a powerful tablet and perform multimedia task with the Surface Pen. Apple has the iPad Pro for similar task but that’s another device to pay for.

Pricing is where most users decide to either purchase or not. The Surface Book starts at $1,499 in the US with base configuration of Core i5, 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM and Intel HD 520. That’s roughly PHP 70,000 and it also doubles as a tablet w/ Surface Pen included. Additional bucks in needed to have more storage and better performance with NVIDIA graphics. The MacBook Pro Retina 13″ is for sale at local Apple retailers for PHP 64,990 with Core i5, 128GB flash storage, 8GB RAM and Intel Iris 6100. If you need more space and larger memory, an upgrade is available but there’s no option for discrete graphics.

Surely, the Windows 10 wagon will see better competition now that Microsoft is joining the war on hardware. We’ll soon see what OEMs will pit against the Surface Book, and how Apple will respond to the calling.

Intel Launches New Moorefield Mobile Processor

Amidst all the hype for the new Skylake processors, Intel quietly slips its new flagship processor, the Intel Atom Z3590, which is geared for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets.

Intel Atom Z3590 shares a lot in common with its predecessor, the Z3580. Both mobile processors are based on the same manufacturing process (22nm), and the same set of feature set which include support for up to 4GB of RAM, AES encryption, Smart Idle, SpeedStep and Intel Virtualization.

The Z3590 also sports the same quartet of processors based on Silvermont microarchitecture, and the same PowerVR G6430 graphics processing unit. The difference on the new model, however, is that it receives a 7% boost in burst clock speed rated at 2.5GHz, and a notable improvement on the burst frequency on its on-board GPU which tops out at 640MHz.

The new Intel Atom Z3590 has already made its way on some of the devices that were launched at IFA 2015 which include Asus ZenFone Zoom.

Intel Launches 6th Generation Core Processor aka Skylake

Just a little over a month after unveiling the last wave of Broadwell chips, Intel debuted the first two members of the 6th Generation Core processors lineup, namely the Intel Core i5-6600K and the Intel Core i7-6700K.

Following the company’s tick-tock credo, these new Skylake desktop chips are still going to be based on 14nm manufacturing process like the Broadwell processors before it. However, the new processors will feature the new LGA1151 socket and will be accompanied by the new Z170 chipset.

As signified by the“K” suffix, both the i5-6600K and the i7-6700K are unlocked and each of its four processing cores can be overclocked beyond its respective frequencies of 3.5GHz and 4.0GHz.

Intel 6th Generation Specs

The Intel Core i5-6600K and the Intel Core i7-6700K are now available in the market with an SRP of $243 and $350, respectively.

Intel mentioned that other SKUs, along with locked processors, will be announced later this year.
