Marcos is INC’s choice for VP, undecided yet for president

A member of the influential Iglesia ni Cristo said the church leadership has called vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr, to tell him that he is their choice for the number two position for the May 9 elections.

“Pinatawag siya (he was asked to come),” the source said.

That is not surprising because the Marcos family has close ties with the Manalo family (The late Felix Manalo founded the INC) since the powerful days of the Marcoses in the 1960’s. In all the elections where Ferdinand Marcos was a candidate, the INC supported him.

In fact in the 1986 snap election, when the INC membership was deeply divided between the beleaguered Marcos and the popular Corazon Aquino, Eduardo Manalo, then the executive minister of the church, stuck with Marcos.

The decision to go for Bongbong Marcos was not difficult for the INC leadership because aside from the family friendship, Marcos is leading the vice presidential race. Winnability is a major factor in the decision of the INC who to endorse.

In a close contest, which is what the May 9 elections is turning out to be, the INC vote is crucial.

Social Weather Stations’ Mahar Mangahas, in his column in the Inquirer September last year, estimates the voting strength of the INC this election to be 1.7 million. Two of the past presidents edged out their respective closest rivals with less number of votes than that. In the 1992 elections, the difference between Fidel Ramos’ votes and that of Miriam Santiago (who were both not endorsed by the INC) was only 874,345. In the fraud-tainted elections of 2004, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (endorsed by the INC) was able to hold on to her un-elected presidency with 1.1 million votes over what was obtained by Fernando Poe, Jr., father of Grace Poe, who is now trying to regain the lead from frontrunner Rodrigo Duterte with only 10 days left to Election Day.

Mangahas said: ..” the proportionate strength of INC voters was about four and one-fourth percent of the electorate in 2010. My guess is that it will be the same in 2016. Assuming population growth of 2 percent per year, a number of 1.5 million votes in May 2010 would become 1.7 million votes by May 2016. This does not allow for either conversions to INC or withdrawals from INC. So I think that the claim of 2.0 million INC votes for 2016 is an overstatement.

How solid is the INC vote?

In 2010, Mangahas said, “In the presidential election, according to the exit poll, Catholics went 43.4 percent for Noynoy Aquino and 28.2 percent for Erap Estrada, whereas INCs went 77.1 percent for Aquino and 12.0 percent for Estrada. The 77 percent is the extent of unity of the INC vote—not 100 percent, but quite a lot.”

The source said the INC has not yet decided who to endorse for president but in the consultation with grassroots members, the choice was Duterte-Marcos.

He said the consultation process goes up to district level, to the ecclesiastical district, to regional, up to the 100-man council composed of senior ministers.

The final decision will be made by the 24-man Sanggunian headed by Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo.

The source said the two of the major considerations in the INC’s decision-making are, “Has this candidate done anything detrimental to the INC? Can the INC depend on this candidate to help the church?”

Winnability is also major consideration in the INC leadership decision.

Another source said the INC used to be not inclined towards a woman president. It, however, endorsed Arroyo when the FPJ and Panfilo Lacson then failed to have a united opposition.

So Grace Poe still has a good chance to get the endorsement, the source said depending on how close she could narrow the gap between her and Duterte. There is also still the factor that the INC would like to make up for not endorsing FPJ in 2004, he said.

The INC sample ballot is released at the end of the Saturday worship before the elections. That would be on May 7.

Megaworld 2014 net income soars 139% to P21.6-billion

Megaworld, the Philippines’ leading integrated urban township developer and biggest office developer and landlord, posted a net income of P21.6-billion (inclusive of P12.1-billion non-recurring gain) in 2014, 139% higher than in 2013. Without non-recurring gain, net income went up by 14% to P9.4-billion last year – reflecting an 18% annual growth since 2009 when net income was P4-billion, or more than double in a span of only five years.

Consolidated revenues, excluding non-recurring gain, rose by 15% to P41-billion with real estate sales increasing by 16% year-on-year to P24.6-billion and rental income growing by 17% to P7-billion.

“Last year was a milestone for us. With Megaworld celebrating its 25th anniversary, we raked in record earnings and managed to grow our land bank to over 4,000 hectares. Our income growth last year was driven by both real estate sales and rental income. We have a more diversified real estate sales mix that is propelled by our integrated urban township developments in Metro Manila, Cebu and Iloilo as well as tourism-related projects in Tagaytay and Boracay,” said Dr. Andrew L. Tan, chairman and CEO, Megaworld.

“In the meantime, our rental income is growing in line with our expectations. Continued growth in our office and mall leasable space will provide the catalyst for exceeding P10-billion in rental income in 2016. Last year also saw the consolidation of Global-Estate Resorts, Inc. (GERI), Empire East Land Holdings, Inc. (ELI) and Suntrust Properties, Inc. (SPI) under Megaworld. This enabled us to strengthen our land bank nationwide,” he added.

“We expect to maintain similar growth momentum generated in the past, achieving a double-digit net income growth every year on the back of a stronger and bigger township portfolio,” he also noted.

Five townships that were launched last year and another five townships to be launched this year will increase the company’s township developments to 20 by the end of 2015.

Last year, the company launched the following townships: Woodside City in Pasig City (12.3 hectares); Southwoods City in the boundaries of Cavite and Laguna (561 hectares); Davao Park District in Lanang, Davao City (11 hectares); Alabang West in Las Pinas City (62 hectares) and Suntrust Ecotown in Tanza, Cavite (350 hectares).

Just last week, the company announced two of the five township developments lined up for this year: The Upper East (34 hectares) and Northill Gateway (50 hectares), both in Negros Occidental.

Megaworld’s pioneering “LIVE-WORK-PLAY-LEARN” concept for integrated mixed-use communities, or commonly known as townships in the Philippines, has enabled the company to complete 342 buildings with a total area of 6.4 million square meters over the past 25 years.

Honda gathers over 100 All New Odyssey reservations

With just over a week since launched, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), received over 100 All New Odyssey reservations which retails at an introductory price of P2,298,000 and comes with free Modulo accessories until March 31 only.

The All New Odyssey is Honda’s offering for customers looking for a seven-seater luxury minivan that showcases the perfect balance of utility and passenger car values.  The All New Odyssey’s utility characteristics suggest spacious cabin and flexible seating; while passenger vehicle characteristics evoke driving performance and fuel efficiency;

To achieve this, HCPI equipped the All New Odyssey with features that has never been offered in any of the Honda vehicles locally available:

Captain Cradle Seats which are especially designed for the second row passengers features different seat structures to provide ultimate comfort. The cradle structure simultaneously raises the seat cushion to the optimal angle when the passenger reclines the seatback. The bendable seatback structure enables the passenger to adjust the angle of the upper half of the seatback independently. And lastly, an ottoman is added for leg support and a more relaxing posture. These seats can be moved backwards by 740mm to exude a limousine-like space or sideways to create a private space for each occupant.

Multi-view Camera System supports safe driving by significantly improving visibility around the vehicle through images generated from four wide angle cameras located on the front grille, right and left door mirrors and the tailgate. Synthesized images are shown on the touch screen display audio with navigation. Different images can be displayed depending on the situation such as driving through an intersection with poor visibility, parking the car or driving through a narrow street.

Smart Parking Assist System helps the driver to park with automatic steering input using the Electric Power Steering (EPS) motor. This is based on automatic detection of the parking space by analyzing the images framed by the Multi-view Camera System. The system supports backing into the parking space and parallel parking even in a tight spot where multiple steering operations are required.

Rear Entertainment System is a 9-inch LCD monitor which can convert the rear cabin into a private entertainment space. Back seat passengers can enjoy watching DVD and other multimedia contents via the HDMI external video input.

Earth Dreams Technology is a next generation set of technological advancements that enhances the engine to greatly improve both fuel efficiency and driving performance. The All New Odyssey is the first Honda model available in the Philippines that is developed with Earth Dreams Technology 2.4-liter, DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT with 7-speed paddle shifter).

No other than HCPI’s President and General Manager, Toshio Kuwahara unveiled and spoke with optimism about the All New Odyssey in a press conference last March 3. “We are overwhelmed to hear about the very positive response from our customers especially in this category. We are working closely with our dealerships to be able to supply the orders we have taken over the week. We plan to continue to introduce new products that suit the demands and needs of the Filipino customers”, said Kuwahara in a press statement.
