Huawei Ascend P7 takes on iPhone 6 with sapphire screen

Huawei mentions in an interview that they are aiming to launch an Ascend P7 variant reinforced with a sapphire display. For those not familiar, sapphire is a very tough material (second hardest to diamond) that Apple is rumored to incorporate largely to the iPhone 6. Inside, the sapphire-toting P7 should still carry its original specs.

Huawei Ascend P7 specs:
5-inch in-cell display @ 1920 x 1080 pixels, 445ppi
Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (soon to be sapphire)
1.8 Ghz quad-core HiSilicon Kirin 910T
Mali450 GPU
2GB RAM
16GB internal storage, expandable up to 32GB microSD
13-megapixel rear-facing AF f/2.0 Sony BSI sensor, w/ LED flash
8-megapixel front-facing camera
LTE Cat 4, up to 150Mbit/s DL
Bluetooth 4.0
WiFi 802.11 b/g/gn
NFC support
Emotion UI 2.3
2,500 Li-Po battery
Android 4.4.2 KitKat

Sapphire glass already made its appearance in the iPhone 5S as protection for its fingerprint sensor and camera lens. If the plan pushes through and sapphire makes its way to the entire display of the Ascend P7, we’ll be looking at a smartphone with premium hardware and beefy internals. Coming at limited supplies, expect it to launch this September with another batch arriving on November.

Huawei Ascend P7 priced at Php20,990, hands-on

Over at Rockwell Tent, Makati, Huawei has just launched their flagship phone, the Ascend P7 which packs a full HD display, the new quad-core Kirin CPU, a good pair of camera sensors and a very sleek, light and thin design.

Huawei Ascend P7

The first thing I noticed handling the device is how light it is; I can’t fathom how Huawei has managed to pack all these specs and power into this thin body. In addition, the 5-inch display is very vibrant and bright as expected. One thing I’d like to note is how the device strikes me as if it’s an Xperia phone – with the boxy edges and the back design. Again, that’s actually a good thing as Huawei has pulled it off making it light and easy to manage.

The UI inside the phone is still a little cartoonish for my taste, but it works really well, even with the absence of the app drawer. Navigating through it was extremely fast and fluid with no slowdowns, and that has left us good impressions on what to expect from the new HiSilicon Kirin 910T CPU.

Huawei Ascend P7 flagship announced

Huawei just announced the successor to its last year’s flagship, the Huawei Ascend P7. It’s sleek and beautifully designed just like before.

This time around, Huawei bumps up the screen estate to the 5-inch mark and puts in a 1080p in-cell display. Aside from that, the camera also got an upgrade from 8MP to 13MP with a f/2.0 aperture. There is still no 4K video-recording though which is already becoming a norm with flagship devices. The front-facing camera is now 8MP with cool features like panoramic selfie or a group selfie — a “groufie” — and a 10 level auto-facial enhancement in beauty mode.

On the processing side, the processor gets a speed bump to 1.8 GHz while the RAM is still at 2GB. The latest Emotion UI 2.3 is also on-board with new fun features that should enhance your experience like power saving modes and customizable lock and home screens.

Huawei Ascend P7 poses for a quick snapshot

Rumors of the Huawei Ascend P7, have been making its rounds on the internet. Recently, however, some dude on Weibo Network managed to sneak a couple of pictures of what is believed to be Huawei’s upcoming flagship handset.

Unfortunately, the uploader didn’t seem to have a decent camera handy during his encounter with the alleged Ascend P7 as the leaked images (seen below) were subpar at best. Well, at least the device didn’t turn out like the rendered image that surfaced prior to this leak.

As for its hardware configuration, the Ascend P7 has been reported to have of a 5-inch 1080p display, 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of storage and LTE connectivity. Moreover, it has two on-board cameras, 13MP on the back and 8MP on the front, and is said to be powered by 2,460mAh battery pack.

Considering that the device is only “meant for internal testing”, we can’t definitively say that the final device will end up like the one in the pictures above, but if the Ascend P7 is priced anywhere near its predecessor (Ascend P6), we think that Huawei’s upcoming smartphone will surely turn some heads.
