HTC One Mini vs One Mini 2

Now that HTC officially debuted the One Mini 2, we’ve decided to place the handset side-by-side with its predecessor to see the improvements that the company made from the last model.

Summary of advantages:

HTC One Mini
* Thinner body (9.3mm vs 10.6mm)
* Lighter (122g vs 137g)
* Higher pixel density

HTC One Mini 2
* Bigger screen
* Faster chipset
* Better front camera
* Bigger battery
* Has micro-SD card slot and NFC

Based from the table above, we can clearly see the advantage that the HTC One Mini 2 has over its predecessor in terms of feature set. It had put on extra weight and became a little bit thicker in the process, but we think that consumers can easily live with that considering the improvements that the new smartphone has to offer.

HTC One Mini 2 press images leak

Following the trend, HTC’s flagship phone, the HTC One M8, seems to be getting a Mini counterpart once again in the form of the HTC One Mini 2, something that just leaked very recently.

As you can see above, the phone looks like it’s going to have the same color variants and textures like its bigger brother. BoomSound is also making its way into the design, and if you would notice, the duo camera system is no longer found here. The rest of the specs and the features are still unknown, but it looks like it’s going to be a tuned down version of the flagship once again judging from the exclusion of the second camera sensor.

HTC announced the previous One Mini back in July last year, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they release it at that time this year or earlier.

HTC promises to replace cracked displays for free

HTC gives users the assurance that the company will fix their busted screen without any charge. This is because of a new initiative called HTC Advantage.

HTC EDITED

HTC must’ve been getting a lot of complaints on faulty displays, or they just want to give consumers additional value for their money. Either way, this is good news for HTC fans.

Starting Feb 18, 2014, a one-time free screen replacement will be guaranteed on the first six months of the device. The devices eligible for Advantage are HTC One, One Mini, and One max. Do take note that this offering starts only today; so if you bought your HTC One Mini last week and you break it, then you’re not covered by this new implementation. Sorry.

As of now, HTC Advantage is only for US-based owners. Let’s hope that this useful service gets across the Philippine shores. And of course, we’re here to keep you updated.

Hands-on at IFA: HTC One Mini

We got our hands on the HTC One Mini here are the HTC booth in IFA (no HTC One Max, unfortunatey). At 4.3 inches, the One Mini is a reduced version of the flagship handset, the HTC One and also making it a direct competitor of the Galaxy S4 Mini.

The HTC One Mini retained the unibody aluminum design of the One and just added a polycarbonate trimming with glossy ceramic finish like the one we saw in the One X.

The dual stereo front speakers are still there as well as the 4MP Ultrapixel camera. The handset feels really good on the hands and has that same premium effect like the HTC One.

The 4.3-inch display has a 720p resolution which makes the screen really clear, detailed and sharp.

The UI is the same Sense 5 UI with Blink feed, the navigation is also smooth and transitions are seemless. We fired several apps and they loaded pretty quickly. We weren’t able to run any synthetic benchmarks though to check how fast that dual-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 processor is.

HTC One Mini specs:
4.3-inch Super LCD2 display @ 720×1280 pixels, 342ppi
1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU
Adreno 305
1GB RAM
16GB internal memory
WiFi
Bluetooth
4G LTE
4MP UltraPixel camera, LED flash, 1080p HD video
1.6MP front-facing camera, 720p HD video
Android 4.2.2 Jellybean with Sense UI
1,800mAh battery
132 x 63.2 x 9.3 mm (dimensions)
122 g (weight)

One of the things that might be of concern is the 1800mAh Li-Ion battery. It may not have enough juice to last the device for the entire day even with moderate to light use. We still have to figure that out once we get a review unit (so far, HTC Philippines still has the Butterfly S and the Desire 600 in their launch line-up).

Placing the One Mini with the HTC One, the hegith fo both handsets are almost the same but the width of the HTC One Mini is tighter but a significant measure. Over-all, we were impressed with the build quality and form factor of the HTC One Mini.

Here’s our specs comparison between the Galaxy S4 Mini vs. the HTC One Mini.

HTC One Mini vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Now that the HTC One mini is out, it’s time to square it off with another mini that could, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. Let the spec showdown begin.

one mini vs s4 mini

To start things off, the One mini and the S4 mini were announced just recently. The S4 mini was announced first in June followed by the One mini a month later. Both smartphones have 4.3-inch displays with Gorilla Glass, Snapdragon 400 dual-core CPUs, LTE connectivity and skinned Android 4.2.2 Jellybean.

one mini_ s4 mini_1

Judging from the spec sheet, the HTC One mini has the advantage in terms of display resolution, built-in internal storage, and aluminum build. However, the S4 mini scores better when it comes to CPU clock speed, RAM, micro SD card support, battery capacity, and smaller and lighter body. Samsung is also offering a dual-SIM variant of the S4 mini, removing LTE as a trade-off.

As for the camera, the S4 mini has a higher megapixel count at 8MP, but since image quality doesn’t always depend on the amount of pixels, we can’t rule out the One mini’s 4MP Ultrapixel technology just yet.

The only missing aspect here is the local pricing. There’s also a good chance that these phones will become carrier exclusives as well so we’ll just have to stay tuned for those. So, how about that? Which mini do you think is better?
