HTC Butterfly S hands-on impression, benchmarks

During one of the sessions at Frequencies Asia hosted by HTC they, they showed us the upcoming HTC Buttefly S, the successor to the first Butterfly added with the touch of the HTC One.

Basically, HTC took the original design and form factor of the Butterfly and added all the nice features found on the HTC One.

It now comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.9GHz with 2GB RAM. The 16GB internal storage is expandable with up to 64GB microSD card (benchmark scores below will show it’s at par with the Galaxy S4).

The physically noticeable difference from the old model is that the Butterfly S feels a bit thicker on the side (by 1.5mm) and also slightly heavier (by 17 grams).

According to the design engineer of HTC, this is the only way they can add more battery capacity — bumping it up to 3,200mAh from just 2,050mAh. I think it’s a fair and welcome trade-off.

BoomSound is present and so is the 4MP ultrapixel sensor. We took a number of sample photos and video just to see if they reflect the same performance as the HTC One. See samples below.

Most of the shots here are under low-light conditions.

Other software features are there as well — like BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe, etc. The Butterfly S will also be shipped with Android 4.2.2 Jellybean, an update we’re looking forward on the HTC One.

While the international version will onyl be in 3G, HTC promises an LTE version will be released in countries that supports it (including the Philippines). So aside from LTE, also expect NFC and IR blaster to be present.

An additional color will also be introduced along with the old red and white variants. We’re not sure if the engineering unit we had was something like dark silver or teal but the one in the photos here is the 3rd color variant.

Here’s the complete hardware configuration of the HTC Butterfly S.

As for the initial benchmarks, the Snapdragon 600 on the Butterfly S performed a bit better than the HTC One.

Nenamark 2 scores top at 59.2fps, Quadrant Stardard scored 13,073 reached and Antutu Benchmark scored 25,811.

HTC still maintains the HTC One is their flagship device. We just hope they sell the Butterfly S a bit lower than the flagship price of the HTC One.
