Celebrating Generika’s 12th Year Anniversary through Public Service

As a way of giving back and upholding its commitment to serving the community, Generika Drugstore in celebration of its 12th year anniversary conducted a big medical mission, with the theme ‘Serbisyo Publiko para sa bawat Pilipino’.

A total of 5,648 individuals benefited from the free consultation or Libreng Konsulta held simultaneously in six sites namely: Sta Cruz, Ilocos Sur; Castillejos, Zambales; Moncada,Tarlac; Ligao, Albay; Tacloban City, Leyte and Quezon Avenue, Iligan. The patients were also given free medicines for cough and colds, fever and pain, treatment for respiratory ailments, maintenance medicines for hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, infections curable with antibiotics, and dietary supplements.

With an aspiration aligned with the company’s advocacy, Generika’s brand ambassador, Mr. Boy Abunda, graced the medical mission in Tarlac, which was conducted in partnership with Go Moncada Advance and Make Your Nanay Proud Foundation (MYNP) – two organizations close to Abunda’s heart.

The outreach program would not have been possible without the support of the community doctors, health care professionals from the Ayala group, pharmaceutical suppliers, barangay officials and the Generika staff and employees who volunteered to make this event a success!

MakatiMed hosts first MPIC Nursing Summit

Makati Medical Center, with the support of eight other health institutions in the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC) hospital group, hosted the first MPIC Nursing Summit titled “Exceeding Hospital Excellence through MPIC Alliance”, with MPIC and MakatiMed Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan as keynote speaker.

The one-day event, serving as a venue for MPIC nursing leaders to collaborate with the aim of standardizing the nursing practices across the hospital group, was held at the 8th Floor Tower 2 Auditorium and organized by the MakatiMed Nursing and Patient Care Services Division.

Participants came from the nursing divisions of the following MPIC hospitals: Asian Hospital and Medical Center (Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila), Cardinal Santos Medical Center (San Juan City, Metro Manila), Central Luzon Doctors’ Hospital (Tarlac City, Tarlac), Davao Doctors Hospital (Davao City, Davao del Sur), De Los Santos Medical Center (Quezon City, Metro Manila), Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital (Bacolod City, Negros Occidental), MegaClinic (Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila), and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (Manila, Metro Manila).

According to Rosalie R. Montenegro, MakatiMed President & CEO, the event was the brainchild of Christine Donnelly, RN, MSN, MA, MakatiMed’s VP for Nursing and Patient Care Services.

“Since we’re a part of the largest group of hospital systems, the MPIC group of hospitals, why not gather all nursing leaders and together create more nursing initiatives?” Ms. Donnelly said, in explaining how the MPIC Summit came into being.

“It is the first time the different MPIC nursing groups are collaborating at a clinical level,” said Ms. Montenegro. “We have collaborated on the corporate side, but not yet on the clinical side, and I think nursing is a good place to start, as our nurses are the face of our hospitals.”

She shared that in MakatiMed, nursing leaders push the Triple C’s – competence, communication, and compassion.

“If we have competent, communicative and compassionate healthcare, our nursing industry will be significantly enhanced,” Ms. Montenegro said. “This Summit is just the beginning. I am happy that finally, nurses are taking their rightful role as collaborators in healthcare.”

In his introduction of Mr. Pangilinan, Augusto P. Palisoc, Jr., President and CEO of the MPIC Hospital Group, talked about how MPIC started investing in hospitals in 2006, “when MakatiMed was in dire financial difficulty and on the brink of bankruptcy and foreclosure.”

“Mr. Pangilinan was invited to serve on MakatiMed’s Board of Directors. When our keynote speaker asked my views, I replied in the negative, telling him that the hospital business is going down fast,” Mr. Palisoc said. “I have worked with Mr. Pangilinan for close to 30 years now, and it’s silly of me to forget that the best way to motivate him to do something is to tell him that it can’t be done. The rest, as they say, is history,” he said.

Your favorite street food might be the cause of your high cholesterol levels

Filipinos’ love affair with street foods is due in many ways to its interesting taste and, more importantly, its affordability. But snacking on your favorite street fare may have far reaching health issues than we care to admit.

The Philippines is known for its rich and wide range food staples. Many are available just around the corner. However, those who frequent sidewalk vendors for their street foods are at an increased risk of having high cholesterol levels—more particularly those who crave for chicken livers.

Chicken livers offer nutrients that are beneficial for anemic individuals: they are rich in protein, iron and vitamin B12, as well as folate which is important in promoting fertility and preventing birth defects.

Despite the essential nutrients present in this food item, Amado Nazal, medical director of Pharex Health Corp, noted that consuming more servings of this variant than what is ideal could threaten a person’s health, risking them to acquire high cholesterol and develop cardiovascular diseases.

According to the American Heart Association, a healthy person needs only 300 milligrams of cholesterol every day while less than 200 milligrams are required for those who already have high cholesterol levels. However, chicken liver already contains 479 milligrams of cholesterol in a three-ounce serving—that’s about two to three skewered chicken livers—not including your other sources of cholesterol within the day.

“Despite how delicious skewered chicken livers are, more particularly those that are grilled on the streets, it may not be a healthy option for people who are already at risk of heart diseases,” Nazal said. “Cholesterol should be ingested in limited amounts as it may cause life-threatening consequences in the long run, especially when left untreated.”

Healthcare providers are starting to fret that Filipinos who have high cholesterol levels will continue to indulge on street foods that are actually bad for them. The World Health Organization added that most people with this condition are not getting the treatment they need to lower their risks of having cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke.

With this, Pharex HealthCorp.—the most prescribed unibranded generics—highlights the importance of taking the prescribed medication and making lifestyle modifications to lower a person’s cholesterol levels.

Nazal said, “For patients who are at risk of having the disease, adhering to their medication is important in reducing their risks of developing heart problems. If they cannot avoid eating grilled chicken livers, then it is important for them to keep their cravings at a minimum and continue their therapy as intended.”

Cholesterol-lowering medication is widely available for Filipinos. But Nazal exclaimed that if “patients will practice non-adherence to their therapy, the quality of their life will be greatly affected.”

He concluded, “Satisfying your cravings for street foods is natural; it’s part of the Filipino culture. However, it’s more important for you to prioritize taking care of yourself to enjoy life’s other flavors.”
