New Taxi fare vs Uber, GrabCar rates: Which is cheaper?

As affirmed by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the fare for the regular and airport taxis plying the streets of Metro Manila now starts at Php 30 with adjusted distance and waiting time charges. With a tight game against TNC companies or Grab and Uber, let’s have a look on how the fares of respective modes of transportation compete with each other.

RatesTaxiAirport TaxiGrabCarUberX
Flag Down / BasePhp 30Php 60Php 30Php 40
Succeeding DistancePhp 3.50 (per 500m)Php 4 (per 500m)Php 12 (per KM)Php 5.70 (per KM)
TimePhp 3.50 (per 90s waiting)Php 4 (per 90s waiting)No chargePhp 2 (per minute)

As you can see from the table above, the base fare regular taxis, GrabCar, and UberX is pretty close to each other. What differs are their charges for distance and time traveled.

For distance, the reasonable charge is from Uber with only Php 5.70/km while everyday taxis place second at Php 7/km (Php3.50 per 500m) while GrabCar requires Php12/km. Uber may be the cheapest for distance but they charge you also Php2/minute of your travel while taxi meters apply the waiting charges of Php3.50 every 90s only when it’s in a complete stop. GrabCar, on the other hand, doesn’t have additional charges.

So, which is cheaper?

It varies per situation. In theory, regular taxis are still the cheapest as long they don’t ask for extra charges a fixed deal for the trip. Uber is ideal when traffic is good while GrabCar is your option if you want peace of mind since it’s a fixed rate and getting stuck in traffic is not a problem. Keep in mind that Uber implements Surge pricing when traffic is really bad in the area while GrabCar has higher fees during rush hours.

The new Taxi rates will be in effect tomorrow, Saturday, March 19th.

GrabCar can now legally operate in NAIA terminals

Finally, starting March 14, passengers at the Ninoy Aquino Internation Airport (NAIA) can book GrabCars without any trouble from the airport’s management.

naia-grab

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and Grab have signed an agreement yesterday which allows GrabCar driver to pick up passengers from the all the four terminals of Manila’s international airport.

But it isn’t as open as we thought because there will be Grab booths at designated areas at the terminal where booking agents may assist. At least, even passengers without a smartphone and data connectivity will be able to book a ride rather than taking the usual taxis or coupon vehicles.

Passengers can only be picked up where the Grab booths are:

Terminal 1 — Main Arrival Curbside
Terminal 2 — Inner Arrival Curbside between Bays 7 and 8
Terminal 3 — Secondary Arrival Curbside between bays 5 and 6
Terminal 4 — Curbside

Grab is the first TNC to be officially accredited by MIAA to pick-up passengers within the airport’s premises and we expect Uber to follow suit.

Starting today, February 4, GrabBike will halt their services. This is Grab’s statement regarding the matter in hand:

We stand firmly on our belief that we have created an innovative solution to the country’s transportation problem and we are working towards finding a way to continue providing it to the community. We’re hopeful that the authorities will reach a positive decision regarding the possible regulations to the service.

We’ve done this before with the support of our loyal Grabbers and we hope to be able to do it again with GrabBike.

Grab, then known as GrabTaxi, started offering GrabBike as an additional service within their app last November 2015 with limited operations within Makati CBD and Bonifacio Global City which later expanded to nearby areas.
