HTC to come out with a GoPro-like camera?

Lazada Philippines

It seems like a smartwatch isn’t the only thing keeping HTC busy these days as new rumors suggest that the Taiwanese company is also on its way to venture into sports cameras.

htc-invite.0

As of now it’s still unknown as to what it will be called, but reports say that a tube-shaped action camera is about to be unveiled by the company at an event this October. The camera supposedly features a 16-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens and waterproof body. It will be able to pair with both Android and iOS devices with the use of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, just like GoPro and its counterparts.

The company reportedly sent out invites for a “double exposure” event that’s speculated to reveal imaging-centric devices including this action camera along with a selfie phone. With a lot of GoPro look-alikes coming out, it’s interesting what HTC is planning to offer consumers in this category.

As an extra, here’s a video of a comparison we did between GoPro and a GoPro look-alike, the Php5K Cam100.

Windows’ hyperlapse algorithm produces super smooth GoPro footage

Windows has developed a new algorithm that can smoothen up your shaky GoPro videos and make it look like you’re hovering over places while wearing a steady cam.

source: GoPro

The technique used is similar to the Photosynth app where it stitches the images you take to form one grand image. In this case it speeds up the video and in the process, breaks each frame down into still images and matches certain parts of the said images needed to produce one smooth clip. It’s basically a fast-forwarded clip of photos that originated from a video.

Below is Windows’ sample between a raw sped up footage and the one applied with the algorithm.

The video still isn’t 100% flawless since traces of the stitching can still be seen (especially on the latter part of the footage), but the result is still very impressive considering it’s still in beta. With the rise of action cameras and even Google Glass, the numbers of first-person videos have been rising. Seeing videos with this hyperlapse technique just makes it more fun and enjoyable to watch. We’re even more excited to see what the final product will be like when it becomes official.

People interested in this technology could look forward to seeing it as a Windows app in the near future, as mentioned by the company.

GoPro unveils Sportsman Mount and Blackout Housing

GoPro introduces two new accessories to accompany its line of sports camera. The Sportsman Mount lets you attach your GoPro to poles, hunting bows, and some gun barrels, while the Blackout Housing gives a fresh new look and adds functionality to your device.

GoPro_Sportsman_Mount2

The Sportsman Mount isn’t an ordinary mount that sticks to flat surfaces. It’s specifically made to attach to any arm or stem-like equipment with a diameter of 10 – 23mm. The Sportsman Mount is compatible with fishing rods and hunting bows. If you’re the hunting type it could be used to clamp to shotguns, rifles, and revolvers; but it can also be used for airsoft and pellet guns to effectively catch your war games on video.

Since the mount connects using a special back cover, compatibility of GoPro version is not an issue. Here are some of its features:

  • Mount one or two cameras to capture footage looking forward, backwards or both directions simultaneously
  • When used with a gun or fishing rod, camera(s) can be mounted below or to the side of the barrel or rod
  • Non-reflective, matte black finish ensures low visibility

On the other hand, the Blackout Housing is a GoPro case that’s waterproof up to 40m. It has a matte black finish for keeping a low profile while shooting and LCD concealment stickers that eliminate light reflection.

The Sportsman Mount is available for $69.99 while the Blackout Housing is at $49.99.

To our fellow GoPro users out there, what are your favorite mounts so far? We’ve recently had fun with a Chesty mount during a trip in Cebu where we used it on an outdoor adventure.
