Google posts new Job Openings for Manila Office

When Google officially announced the opening of their Manila office, we saw a lot of buzz and thousands of people started looking for job opportunities with the company. Last week, they finally posted some job openings.

While the good news is that new positions are now available, the bad news is all of them are sales related that’s it’s all in just one department (Sales) and no other openings like in Search, Programming or Products (devices).

One new role was posted 3 days ago and labeled as Vendor Operations Lead (under Sales Operation) and they’re also looking for Vendor Operations Quality Manager (which is under Sales & Account Management).

Both roles require heavy sales background and a deep understanding of Google Adwords platform. This verifies our earlier story about what to expect from Google Philippines.

You can check out the full listings here.

Google Android: The Best and Worst of

Mobile operating systems is probably one of the most sensitive topics in the industry. Insult one platform and you start a flame war. Let’s move on, shall we? Go back to basics. In the current perspective, what does Android have to offer? What does it lack? Read on and join in the discussion.

It was the year 2008 when Android was first introduced, and it was a humble beginning just like any other. It had an Android Market, a set of widgets and a bit more. fortunately, Android nailed the notification system through the notification bar on the spot. In a span of just a few years, the platform and ecosystem flourished. Early in its years, it has been labeled as buggy and sluggish. Can the same be said today? Looking at Android Jellybean side by side with Cupcake, you’ll immediately say a lot has changed.

The Best of Android

1. It almost acts like your desktop computer – Android’s homescreen is similar to your desktop. You can add widgets, shortcuts and folders – and you can arrange it according to your taste. The green robot gives you access to your file directory and a wide array of installers. For the geeks, you can hack, mod and overclock, similar to the things you would do to your computer.

2. Personalization - Everyone would like to have that feeling that they actually own the device. Set a live wallpaper. Add the widgets that you care about on your homescreen. Google Now will push through the searches you need. If you don’t want the keyboard, you can change it. Heck, if you don’t want the way your homescreen works, you can change it.

3. Feature Set - More often than not, Android has already taken the lead in introducing new features. When everyone was taking regular photos, Android had panorama. Now that competitors are on panorama, Android is a step forward with photo-sphere. Just as mentioned in #1, the OS had the notification bar on day one, when competitors like iOS just had it in 2011.

4. Variety - You want a camera? There’s a camera running Android. You want something with a stylus? Same can be said. There are choices in every corner for Android. It might not even appeal or make sense, but an oven running Android even exists (yes, we’re looking at the kitchen). For those that cannot afford a high-end Android device, there are thousands of choices and different experiences in a much more affordable price range. While this could be a great strength for the OS, this could also be a dilemma.

The Worst of Android

1. Software Updates – Hundreds, probably thousands, of models of Android devices, which one will get updates? If you probably have an underrated phone, say goodbye to your update. Manufacturers will only update your device if it gets enough attention — and not even immediately. It’s going to take a long time, and the moment it arrives, it could be time for a handset upgrade.

2. Hardware upgrades - Buy the best spec’d phone in the market and months later, voila, there’s a better one. Android has been quite known for pushing hardware limit; it’s both a good thing and a bad thing. iOS & Windows Phone was never about the specs, and this is where Android wins and fails. Android users are frustrated because of how fast new models are releases.

3. Apps Ecosystem - The quantity of apps is not the problem. It’s the quality. For quite some time, Android tablets had great hardware but bad app support. Most apps are just phone apps blown up to larger scale, and it’s ugly. Another thing is the polishing, where ads are badly arranged, details are misplaced and so on. Only a few apps follow Android’s Holo UI compared to Windows’ and iOS’ UI.

Android has come a long way from its harsh beginnings to present, but one thing is certain, Android is spreading like wildfire. What about you, what were your best and worst experiences with Android? Where do you see it in the next 5 years?

Editor’s Note: This article is one of a 3-part series tackling the best and worst characters of smartphone platforms. You can read about the one for Microsoft Windows Phone here and for Apple iOS here. – Yuga

Android 4.2.2 on Nexus 4 finally arrives

Google’s current flagship handset, LG Nexus 4 can now join the ranks of its siblings (Samsung Galaxy Nexus, ASUS Nexus 7 and Samsung Nexus 10) as the online search giant released the Android 4.2.2 update for the glass-backed handset.

Earlier last month, we’ve reported that some users in Brazil and Malaysia we’re surprised that their Nexus 4 was already running on the latest version of Jellybean right off the bat. At that time, information about what the update brings other than the usual bug fixes.

Fortunately, other users who’ve already received the update shared some insights on what upgrades the patch have brought. In summary, this is what they’ve found out.

• App download notification now shows the remaining percentage
• Toggles on the Quick Settings
• New sound notifications for Wireless Charging and Battery Low.

As you can see, the update doesn’t bring in a whole lot of new features to the handset. Significant or not, we can all be thankful to Google for making sure that their devices are well-maintained and issues are being ironed out. Speaking of issues, the update is also said to finally put an end to the Nexus 4’s unofficial LTE support. This shouldn’t concern you too much though as the hardware only makes use LTE Band 4, a band that is not being used in in our country.

Sad to say, we’re still waiting to be notified for the update to come on our Nexus 4 (JOP40D build). Users who have already received the 4.2.2 update is said to own the smartphone with JDQ39 build. We’ll keep checking on our device and we’ll update this post once we got the update. If you can’t though, you can download the patch directly from Google and manually install it on your device.

Google Chromebook Pixel leaks, MacBook competitor?

A video just made the rounds on the internet claiming to be Google’s very own laptop, named the Chromebook Pixel.

The video comes from a company named Slinky. The leaked video was taken down after a while, but was uploaded on YouTube soon enough. The company’s CEO, Victor Koch, claimed on Google Plus that they have been hacked and some of their projects have been leaked. More interesting is that Sergey Brin is tagged on the apology note.

The Chromebook Pixel, named Google Link by the source, features a super high-res screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1700. To top it off, it’s also a touch-enabled display. Halfway through the video, there was an array of colored dots shown which resembles the Nexus logo in a way. Other than that, there seems to be nothing else to note.

No other brands have been mentioned, so it could be possible that this one is similar to Google’s Nexus line – specifically the discontinued Q. The video can be a fake however, but there is a high chance that this could be real since the video is professionally made and the clues hinting towards it.

Rounding up the rumors, it seems that along with this, we will see Android Key Lime Pie with the Motorola X Phone when Google I/O comes.

What to expect from the Google office in the Philippines

When Google announced their local office in the Philippines yesterday, there was a lot of buzz that followed as the search giant sets its eyes on the country. But what does it really mean to have a local Google Philippines office?

Just like several other multi-national companies, Google Philippines will primarily be a sales-driven team. This is the same case with Intel PH, Microsoft PH, Apple PH and even Yahoo! PH (although Yahoo! PH also has huge editorial team for localized content).

That means focus on Google Adwords, their advertising platform, will be a primary concern and the Google PH team will mostly be servicing companies and small to medium businesses (SMBs) in this front.

The composition of their current team indicates a strong sales background (even during the event, special mention was accorded to the sales team).

So what can we expect from Google Philippines:

  • Concentrated attention to the Google Adwords program with SMEs, SMBs and advertising agencies and media buyers. Better support and more face-to-face trainings on the field.
  • More localized services. Expect more Google sites and services to be available in Tagalog.
  • Bigger presence in the local scene like trade shows, conferences, summits and the like.
  • Probably, there will also be local support for AdSense Publishers and DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP).

On a side note, this is very timely since election is just months away so expect a lot of political ads on your search results soon!

What we should not expect but still hope for are:

  • Don’t expect job openings in tech (programming, DB, network, etc). These jobs are mostly ran out of regional offices like Mountain View or Ireland. Most of the openings in the PH office will mostly be sales and support (advertising side).
  • Don’t expect product support for the Nexus line. Remember that Google has been present in at least 4 other SEA countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand and those countries still don’t have local support for the Nexus line in the last 5 years.
  • Don’t expect much about Google Play opening up other sections like music, movies and products. This will mostly be decided by regional which is SG. Again, forget about a cheaper subsidized Nexus phone.
  • No Google Fiber, no city-wide free Google WiFi. Slight possibility of Google Street View since I saw this already being served in Thailand.

To those asking for the office address of Google PH, sorry it’s top secret (I heard it is somewhere here in the Fort, the Net Lima Building).
