DIY smartphone Project Ara: What are your specs?

So we’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy S5 flagship phone. There’s also Sony’s Xperia Z2 and even the All-new HTC One. With these companies giving us a set of fixed specs, I say forget about all the hoopla for a second and instead, you tell us what you want to see in your smartphone when Google’s DIY Project Ara comes to fruition.

ara7

I’ll get this started. Here’s how I want my Project Ara:

4.7-inch body
1920 x 1080 display
20MP rear camera with Xenon flash and night vision
5MP wide-angle front camera
4K video recording
Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
3GB RAM
64GB internal memory
Stereo speakers
Pico projector
2 x 2500mAh battery

Since I’m more of a multimedia guy, I want my specs to lean more towards imaging capabilities. I’d prefer a 20MP rear camera with 4K video capabilities and a Xenon bulb so I could effectively capture clear and blur-free images even at night, with the option of night vision widely-seen on Sony’s handycams. To share them, I’d get a Pico projector of some sort to easily show my latest photos or short films to my friends. Also, two battery modules to hot-swap!

The point of this article (besides publicly day-dreaming about our fantasy phones) is so that we realize the possibility of the future of smartphones as early as today. Google’s Project Ara is now undergoing developer conferences and could come early 2015 – which is just a year from now.

Would it be a hit to consumers like you? How much would it affect other smartphone manufacturers? Would their strategy change? If so, how? Only time will tell.

Google Nexus 8.9 releases June, features 2K+ display?

Google is said to be in the process of releasing an 8.9-inch variant to add to its well-received Nexus lineup. The Nexus 8.9 could feature a display with more than 2K resolution and will hit store shelves some time in June if alleged reports prove true.

According to the Director of Tablet and Monitor Research at IHS Technology, volume production of the ‘high-performance’ Nexus 8.9 is expected to roll out in either July or August, after its probable announcement at Google’s I/O event in June.

Although it might seem that Google isn’t inside its familiar territory with big-sized devices, its selling point will be its reasonable pricing and better performance ratio. The Nexus 8.9 (which HTC could be making) should be around $299 (Php13,500) and would carry the next Android OS.

It looks like we’ll be seeing more tablets with screen resolutions going up to 2K as a standard. We’ve recently reported on Samsung’s upcoming device that could have a 2K Super AMOLED display as well as the larger Nexus 10 2; but the Nexus 8.9 plans to top those as it could feature display resolutions of more than 2K. We’ll let you know as soon as this is confirmed and when the exact pixel measurement is out.

Moto 360, by far the most visually-appealing smartwatch

Motorola has officially introduced the Moto 360 smartwatch that has a design that ‘begs to be worn’.

MOTO360

In its official blog, Motorola shows off its new smartwatch that veers away from the usual square/rectangular form factor that we’re currently seeing and instead went with the classic rounded shape. In the promo video of the Moto 360, Head of Consumer Experience Design Jim Wicks stated, “This is all about reinvention of the modern day timepiece. We decided if we’re going to do the Moto 360, we’re going to do it round.”

That they did, and the result was very pleasing. The company has managed to merge the old school look with today’s technology — making the rounded screen project the classic look of a wristwatch so it looks like an ordinary timepiece on the first glance, but don’t let it fool you as it functions on Google’s Android Wear and comes packed with all its features.

“With just a twist of the wrist you can see who’s emailing or calling, what time your next meeting is, or your friend’s latest social post.”

According to their blog, the Moto 360′s iconic design is made from premium materials that feel comfortable and familiar on your wrist, meaning it’s just like wearing an elegant watch that can do a lot more than tell time.

The Moto 360 will be available in different styles to match your personality and will be available in summer which is around the end of June and onwards. It will come initially in the US and will eventually be up for grabs globally.

If you want to know more about Google’s Android Wear and what it could do side-by-side with the Moto 360, we have an article on that.
