Google has announced an update to its famous Maps and Earth services as the company now uses new and higher-resolution imagery from NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite.

What does this mean for us? Well, to start, you can view the whole world, including the Philippines in greater definition. Second, virtual exploration of places we wish to observe from above is more enjoyable and detailed than before. It has been 3 years since Google has updated the images of their free mapping services.

How detailed? Check out the comparison of two New York City shots provided by Google below:

The new cloud-free mosaic of the world is crafted from nearly a petabyte of data with more than 700 trillion pixels.

Google introduces Nearby, location-based app suggestions

Just when we thought that apps couldn’t be more bothersome to be downloaded for single use, Google has introduced a new service that’s coming soon on your mobile. It’s called Nearby and the name itself will give some answers on how it works.

Since Play Store apps are mostly created for use in specific locations or situations, as per Google’s blog post, the Nearby feature will use your current coordinates and Bluetooth connectivity to push app suggestions depending on your location. For example, you’re in a museum and to make your visit more trivial, it will buzz you a related app. Or, while waiting for your flight, the airline’s app will be suggested for download just in case you want it.

And if you have a Google Cast or Android Wear device around, it can push the notification to the wearable and a single tap can accept the request.

Nearby is part of the upcoming Google Play Services update and will work on Android 4.4 KitKat and above.

Google Motion Stills app creates a more beautiful, steady GIF

Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus owners are in for a treat from Google as the tech-giant released a new app for iOS that will bring your Live Photos to a whole new level.

With the Google Motion Stills, shaky and unusable Live Photos will turn into a more beautiful creation thanks to the app’s impressive motion tracking and stabilization tech. This works by freezing the background areas of Live Photos while allowing the foreground to move freely. The output? A professional-looking steady Live Photo in GIF format for easy sharing.

Here are some samples provided by Google:

Sadly, it’s just available for iOS for now. Head over to the App Store here and download the app now.

With the release of the beta-quality version of Android N, it just makes sense for Google to start seeding its Marshmallow software to compatible devices. The OTA (over-the-air) update with build number A9000ZCU1BPE2 comes with the usual Marshmallow niceties including Google Now on Tap and Doze. Although it initially started in China, we could safely expect the update to arrive soon and you could manually check your device by going to Settings > About Phone > Software Update.

Additionally, it’s also been reported that the A7 (2016) and A5 (2016) could be the next ones to receive the software update.

Google Play Store coming to Chromebooks

Chromebook users have something to look forward in the coming months as the Google Play Store is heading to their notebooks and will have the compatibility to run Android apps on their desktop.

Having the Play Store on your Chromebook will further the productivity of your notebooks plus the ability of playing popular games. Just imagine Clash of Clans on a big screen and better controls. Since the apps from the Play Store are designed for smartphones, their could be some minor adjustments, but tablet apps should work pretty well.

The same apps that run on phones and tablets can now run on Chromebooks without compromising their speed, simplicity or security.

The update for the Chromebooks is first slated to arrive this June but with Acer Chromebook R11, Asus Chromebook Flip, and Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) only. Others have to wait for a later release. To check out if your device is listed, head over here.
