Google rolls out Play Store v6.7 update, geared towards beta apps

Google Play Store v6.7 has started rolling out and it should be hitting your Android device any time now. This update is by no means an overhaul design. Instead this is a pretty light update which will makes it easy to join or leave a beta test from the app listing.

On this latest update, you can now see the beta status at the top of the app listing if you are enrolled in the beta program of a particular app. Also, you are now able to join or leave beta test from app listing at the bottom.  You can even leave a feedback directly for the developer of the beta app. One really welcome feature is that it will also notify you if an app is unreleased or it has only ever been a private beta with no public version.

While this Play Store app update won’t mean much to folks that aren’t in any beta tests, for those that are, it’s a huge deal. If you want to grab the latest version of the Play Store, download and install the apk file here.

Watch Gilas games live on your mobile device

For the first time in decades, the Philippines will battle it out with the world’s basketball greats at the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Luckily, Pinoys can conveniently watch history as it unfolds on TV as most of Gilas Pilipinas’ games will be held on Philippine primetime.

But what if you’re just coming off a meeting, or if you get stuck in horrible traffic and don’t have access to TV? You shouldn’t worry about missing the action, as wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has launched the only streaming app that will let you watch Gilas matches as they happen, wherever you are, using your mobile device.

Simply download the free ViewStream app on Google Play, sign up with your Smart, Sun Cellular, or Talk ‘N Text number, and click on the app’s TV5 channel to watch – also for free – the scheduled Gilas tune-up games for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain. First on the list is the August 16 match against France, which counts among its players NBA star Tony Parker.

You can watch the replays of the games on the app’s Aksyon TV channel. The two channels’ scheduled news and entertainment programs can also be accessed for free on the app.

Starting August 30, you can watch live and ad-free Gilas FIBA matches on the dedicated ViewStream channel of the app for just P15 a day. You don’t even need a credit card to pay for access because the P15 will just be deducted from your prepaid load or charged to your postpaid bill.

In areas without WiFi access, ViewStream will work great on a 3G or LTE connection. Because you’re on the country’s biggest and strongest network, the app will load the games with minimal buffer, giving you a seamless, enjoyable Gilas experience. (Standard data charges will apply if you’re not on a data plan or package.)

Here are the schedules of the tune-up and FIBA games, which you can also find on the ViewStream app. For more information, please visit www.smart.com.ph/gilaspilipinas

Confide’s self-destructing messages now on Android

In a world where the likes of the Heartbleed bug threatens digital security, one can’t be sure if the things they send out remain as private as they want it to be. Confide is a former iOS-exclusive app that aims to address just that by providing their users with an encrypted way of sending messages and email.

Confide app

“Spoken words disappear after they’re heard. But what you say online remains forever. With confidential messages that self-destruct, Confide takes you off the record.”

To read a message, the user has to swipe the words one by one to reveal them. Once the finger already passes over a word, it vanishes once again. The reason behind this is so that performing a screenshot will be hard from the end of the person reading your message. In any case a screenshot is made, the app notifies the sender. In addition, Confide tells you exactly when and what time the recipient has read your message.

As you’ve probably noticed, Confide is a lot like the famous Snapchat app, only minus the naked selfies. It uses an end-to-end encryption system to assure its users of a secured service.

Confide has been available to iOS since January and has already received praises from users world-wide. The company announces that they’re now on Android, too, and that in fact the Android version is currently faster than its iOS counterpart. Lastly, Confide is compatible with devices running Gingerbread onwards, which means a lot of Android users can use this messaging app to either send a secret message to a lover, plan a surprise party, or close deals with business partners.
