A lot has changed since Google unveiled the Nexus 5 back in 2013. As such, the search giant made sure that they equip the Nexus 5X with all the right tools to be competitive in today’s smartphone scene.

Almost all of the features found on the previous model were upgraded on the Nexus 5X which include a bigger screen, beefier battery pack and more powerful engine. More importantly, the few features that were not improved remained at par with Nexus 5X’s precursor.

The only thing that changed is the price. During its debut, the 16GB variant of the Nexus 5 retailed for $349. The base model of the new Nexus 5X, on the other, will hit the store shelves with a $379 price tag.

Winning features

LG Nexus 5X:
* Thinner design
* Improved processor
* Larger camera pixels on rear camera w/ Laser AF
* Higher resolution video recording
* Front camera has higher resolution
* Updated Bluetooth
* USB Type-C
* Nexus Imprint
* Slightly larger battery pack

LG Nexus 5:
* Better pixel density on the screen
* A bit more lightweight
* Cheaper SRP during first market release

The new Google Nexus 5X is now available for pre-order on Google Store. It will be available in 16GB and 32GB and are priced at $379 and $429 respectively.

Specs Comparison: Motorola Nexus 6 VS Huawei Nexus 6P

One can make the argument that last year’s Nexus smartphone, the Motorola Nexus 6, wasn’t exactly a hit. The being said, the search giant is looking to turn things around with their new flagship smartphone, the Google Nexus 6P.

With the exception of the screen size, the Huawei Nexus 6P clearly has the upper hand in almost every facet against its precursor when it comes to specification. Obviously, this is expected from a newer device, otherwise Google will definitely take some heat from the specs junkies.

Although the screen of the Nexus 6P has shrunk a bit compared to the Motorola-made Nexus smartphone, Google has maintained the quad-HD resolution on their latest flagship handset, resulting to a more pixel-packed display that has a pixel density of 518 ppi.

Nexus 6P camera

Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the camera. From the pixel count standpoint, the Nexus 6P’s rear camera was a downgrade from the Nexus 6’s 13-megapixel rear snapper. In exchange though, the search giant increased the pixel size on the newer model, which in theory should result to better image quality.

Unlike the rear camera, the Nexus 6P’s front camera received a significant increase in resolution. From 2-megapixel sensor found on the Motorola Nexus 6, the resolution of the Nexus 6P’s front-mounted snapper was bumped up to 8-megapixel.

Some of the things that was not mentioned in the specs sheet above that is worth noting is the addition of the USB Type-C port on the Nexus 6P and the addition of the Nexus Imprint, which is a fancy term that Google uses for the fingerprint sensor.

Speaking of things that were not mentioned on the specs sheets of these two Nexus smartphones, Google has ditched the metal-plastic material from the previous model and has gone all-metal on the Nexus 6P. The search giant was also able to make the Nexus 6P thinner, lighter and more compact than its predecessor despite only shaving 0.2mm off the screen size.

Winning features

Huawei Nexus 6P:
* Thinner and lighter design
* Better materials used for body
* Better pixel density on the screen
* Improved processor
* Larger storage capacity
* Larger camera pixels on rear camera w/ Laser AF

* Updated Bluetooth

Samsung Galaxy Note 5:

* Radio

The new Google Nexus 6P will be available for pre-order on Google Store starting today. It will be offered in three storage capacities (32GB, 64GB and 128GB) and are priced at $499, $549 and $649 respectively.

Google is Rumored to Unveil Two Nexus Smartphones This Month

Google has recently sent out an invitation for an event that will take place on the 29th of this month. Along with it come speculations that the search giant will announce two smartphones under its famed Nexus lineup, which is in line with the previous rumors.

If you have not been keeping tabs about the rumors, it started with LG and Huawei getting a nod from Google to make the two upcoming Nexus smartphones (you can read the stories here and here).

As the months went on, the rumor mill continues to churn out more details about the handsets. Back in July, a near-complete specification of the supposedly Huawei-made Nexus smartphone was leaked by the popular leakster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) which include a 5.7-inch Quad-HD display, Snapdragon 820 processor and a metal chassis.

Two months later, it was the LG-made Nexus’ turn to have its specs leaked. According to the rumor it will be a toned down version of the other Nexus device sporting a 5.2-inch Full-HD display, Snapdragon 808 with 3GB RAM and 2,700mAh battery pack.

In keeping with the latest trends, both Nexus smartphones are supposedly equipped with a USB Type-C port and will run on the latest iteration of Google’s mobile OS, Android Marshmallow.

2015-nexus-5-concept

Today the latest development in the long line of speculations involved the naming of the new Nexus smartphones. Instead of taking on the Huawei Nexus name based on previous reports, the 5.7-inch model is believed to be called as Nexus 6P. Meanwhile, the smaller of the two will be called the Nexus 5X.

Nothing is certain at this point in time, so do take these rumors with your usual grain of salt. Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long to know if there are any truth behind these speculations as Google is slated to hold an event later this month.

Headlines We Wish to See in 2015

Lazada Philippines

2015 is just around the corner and I’m sure that you are also hoping or wishing that the new year would bring better things compared to 2014. And for us at YugaTech, we are also looking forward to bringing you better news. So before we say goodbye to 2014, here are examples of headlines we wish to see in 2015.

Philippine Internet: One of the fastest in Asia – a lot has been said about the status of the Internet in the Philippines. We all know it is one of the slowest and most expensive among Asian countries. A lot of proposals were put in place this year like IP peering, law amendment, Senate bills, and increased budget allocation for the NTC. We’re hoping that the efforts exerted in 2014 will finally bear fruits in 2015.

Google Fiber to arrive in the Philippines – This may not happen next year but since the article is technically a wishlist, we can include Google’s Fiber Internet service which offers speeds of up to 1000 Mbps. Just imagine the things you can do with that kind of speed.

MRT to get new trains, upgraded systems – The aging MRT has been the talk of the town this year due to accidents, commuter inconveniences, and technical problems. Our lawmakers and corresponding government agencies are already aware of the problem and know that the mass transit system along EDSA needs a complete overhaul and upgrade. We just hope that the process goes quickly and efficiently so we can enjoy it next year.

Public transportation in the Philippines now safer, cleaner – It’s not just the MRT or LRT that needs improvement. Our public transportation needs a complete transformation as well. It is alarming to see the number of accidents and crimes that involves jeepneys, buses and taxis in 2014. Companies like Uber which provide better services compared to ordinary taxis are being restricted in the country. One of our wishes for 2015 is that our public transportation to drastically improve. We want to see more eco-friendly vehicles like the e-jeep and e-trike on the road as well.

SLEX to Baguio in 3 hours – If you Google “SLEX to Baguio”, the search result would show a travel time of 3 hours and 22 minutes, that is “without traffic”. Since the term “without traffic” is almost not applicable in all major roads in the country (like EDSA), the actual travel time could be significantly longer. This was experienced by Senate President Franklin Drilon who spent more than 11 hours on the road traveling from San Juan to Baguio. Drilon blamed the inefficient system of collecting toll fees in expressways and calls for a probe. Hopefully it works, so we can go to Baguio without spending the whole day on the road.

Freedom of Information bill passed into law – The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act aims to make the government transparent by mandating the disclosure of information pertaining to official acts, transactions, or decisions, as well as government research data used as a basis for policy development, regardless of its physical form or format. If passed into law, every Filipino will have the right to request such information from all government agencies, thus allowing them to participate and contribute in good governance. As of March 2014, the Senate passed the FOI bill on third and final reading. Hopefully the FOI Act finally becomes a law in 2015.

Project Ara officially launched – We’ve been reporting about the module-based smartphone that Google has been working on for quite a while now. A lot of people, including ourselves, have been looking forward to it not just because of its unique interchangeable parts that open up different possibilities, but also because building your own phone could generally be more affordable than current flagship models in the market. Finally seeing it available on store shelves would be something to look forward to.

Devices on Google Play now available in the Philippines – Not all of Google’s services are available here in the Philippines and one of them is Devices on Google Play which allows customers to purchase Google Nexus mobile devices, Chromebooks, other Google-branded hardware, and accessories. You can buy some of them through our local online sellers but you won’t be able to enjoy Google’s support and warranty for these devices. If Google can start selling their devices in the country, that would be great.

Solar-powered homes becoming more common in the Philippines – We reported in November about SM North EDSA being the largest solar-powered mall in the country. Now imagine if every household can also have access to solar-powered systems. We can now lower our electricity bills as well as contribute to the environment by utilizing clean and renewable energy. Solar-powered systems don’t come cheap though but since Pag-IBIG now offers loans for purchase of solar panels, the idea isn’t too far-fetched.

Filipino students can now study at home using the Internet – In June, we wrote about House Bill 4161 that aims to institutionalize the open electronic learning school system that allows students to receive the educational services they need without having to go to their classes regularly. Once the Bill is enacted into law, hopefully in 2015, the new system will allow students to study on their own without having to regularly attend class in conventional classrooms. Students can use the Internet and other multimedia technologies as a learning alternative.

How about you guys, what headlines do you wish to see in 2015? Share your thoughts in the comments field below.
