Now here’s something you don’t see quite often. According to PGR21 Chung-Ang University, one of South Korea’s high-raking schools, will be opening its doors for eSport gamers who wish to be part of their institution as an athlete. Yes, as an Athlete.
Aspiring applicants can take the CAU’s entrance exam starting next year which, surprisingly, does not have a minimum passing grade! However, the candidate’s gaming prowess and academic background will be taken into account in order for them to be admitted into the school.
Once everything is ironed out, the “student” will join other athletes under the school’s Sports and Science department which consists of other pupils who excel in traditional sports (team or individual) like Basketball and Bowling.
We’re glad to see how eSports have evolved in such a way that people are slowly recognizing it as a legit sport and not just a distraction. CAU’s decision to integrate it into their system will certainly open a lot of doors, and possibly influence other colleges and universities to follow suit. Way to go Chung-Ang University!
The new and toned-down version of the popular Nintendo Wii gaming console will soon be available in the United States with a very low price tag.
The Wii Mini, which is already available in Canada and Europe for months now, is making its way to the US for only $99.99 (around Php4321). The affordable bundle already includes a Wii Remote Plus controller, a Nunchuck and a copy of Mario Kart Wii to get you started. The gaming console is 1.9 x 6.3 x 7.5 inches and weighs just 0.7 kg.
Being a “mini” version of the original Wii, it is smaller, cheaper and has some few losses like WiFi and GameCube support. This means online features are nowhere to be found. The good news is that it still supports accessories and the 1,300 game titles for Wii.
The real successor to the Wii, the Wii U, is generally not doing well so Nintendo is hoping that the Wii Mini will get the hype. Also, new game titles like Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be launching this year. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. will arrive in 2014.
The Nintendo Wii Mini will be available for purchase in the US starting November 17th.
UPDATE: Nintendo Wii Mini retails for Php6,150 at Data Blitz
Coming over for the Pinoy Gaming Festival, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan visits the Philippines. We got our chance to interview the Chief Gamer and we got a lot of insights on what Razer’s plans are for the future & for its Filipino gamers out there.
Razer reinstated their love for gaming & product design many times in our exclusive interview. When asked about the business, Min joked about not focusing or knowing anything about the business at all. That exactly follows their creed – it’s about creating the best products for gamers, by gamers.
With that said anyway, Min answered that Razer won’t be making any affordable alternatives to products such as the $1,799 Blade (near Php80k). Not that they don’t want to, but because perfection, as they say, really comes at a high cost.
“It’s not that we don’t want be affordable so to speak, but I think it’s been our design ethos to build no-compromise products…”
As for the Edge, the Core i7 8GB RAM packing tablet at $1,499 (near Php65k), Razer said that it won’t face a Haswell refresh anytime soon. That leaves everyone stuck with the current option, but nevertheless it’s still the most powerful tablet out there that you can buy.
We also asked about if Razer’s entering the mobile industry with a gaming smartphone, devices with ARM CPUs & the like and they just simply said that they don’t talk about it. That opens a lot of doors for speculations and possibilities now, doesn’t it?
Anyway, the full 16-minute interview is down below and it also covers topics from virtual reality gaming & wearable technology to peripherals & Min’s favorite colors. We suggest you go watch that below:
Oh, and if this page gets a million likes on Facebook, Min says that they WILL build a Razer Toaster.
