The Coolest Gadgets of CES 2016

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) saw a lot of promising gizmos that are very much appealing to today’s tech-loving lifestyle. From all of the products launched, here’s a hand-picked list of some of the coolest gadgets during the show.

1. BRAGI Dash Wireless Earbuds

bragi-dash-earbuds2

Germany-based company BRAGI unveiled the world’s first smart wireless headphones — the Dash. The Dash is quite a looker on the outside and is also loaded on the inside. Obviously, it streams music wirelessly thru Bluetooth 4.0 but it also has a built-in storage that can store 4GB worth of audio files.

The Dash can also act as a fitness tracker since it is able to calculate heartbeat, steps, and duration of activity that all go straight to a partnered app. Additionally, it has sensors on its surface that you could tap and swipe to control the volume and hear external noises even without removing the Dash.

2. Parrot DISCO

parrot-disco-1

Moving away from the usual quad-propeller design of drones, Parrot launched its new DISCO that implements a fixed-wing approach with a nose camera for recording aerial footage.

Some of its key features include using a VR headset to be able to “fly” as the drone, going as fast as 80km/h without losing stability, and semi auto pilot that only requires you to throw the flying wing to take off.

3. Nikon KeyMission 360

nikonkeymission360side

Nikon surprised many with the introduction of their new action cam and with it comes some pretty cool features. This shooter is waterproof and captures 360-degree photos and 4K videos.

How the KeyMission 360 captures images around it is via the lens that are located on opposite sides of the device. The image sensor, together with the company’s algorithm, stitches them together to produce ultra-high-definition photos and videos.

4. Garmin Varia Vision

garmin-varia-vision

Designed to easily work with other devices from Garmin, the Varia Vision is a heads-up display (HUD) for cyclists. It attaches itself to sunglasses and projects a small image at the corner of the user’s field of view and shows stats, notifications, and other important details — eliminating the need to look down or worse, to check the phone while riding a bicycle.

5. Casio WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch

casio smart watch_2

The Casio WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch is designed for outdoor activities such as trekking, cycling, and fishing. The body is water-resistant up to 50 meters and built to military standard specifications.

The watch face features a dual layer display with monochrome and color LCDs which shows information such as compass direction, air pressure and altitude, sunrise and sunset times, tide graphs, and activity graphs.

6. Segway Advanced Personal Robot

segway-advanced-personal-robot

Segway also announced that they (together with Intel and Xiaomi) will be developing what’s called the Advanced Personal Robot that not only transports you from point A to point B on its wheels but also serves as your assistant on some of your daily tasks.

Users can ride it like a regular “hoverboard”, and it can be commanded to accomplish simple jobs for you like carrying groceries or answering the door using its sensors. There are also compatible arm-like extensions that further add to the things that it could do.

Have your own list of cool and nifty gadgets that were announced last CES? Feel free to share them with everyone.

Gadgets You Need for a Memorable Netflix and Chill Session

So we got Netflix here in the Philippines and that means we can finally Netflix and chill for real. Now, however you may interpret that phrase, here are the gadgets you may need for a fun evening of video-streaming and relaxing.

netflix-and-chill2

Of course, the first thing you need in order to enjoy a good Netflix and chill session is to have a sizeable television in which you could stream your favorite shows and movies on. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a smart TV that readily connects to the Internet since you can also use other gizmos like Google’s Chromecast to do that. Partnering those with a good pair of speakers will also make your movie-watching more immersive. There are good options like JBL’s SB400 soundbar and Bose’s Cinemate 15 that impressed us with their performance.

SONY DSC

That is the ideal setup for watching movies, but not all have those pricey equipment. So for those that are a bit more modest with their gadgets, watching on a laptop is enjoyable as well, although you won’t get as much enjoyable audio as home theaters. This is when a decent Bluetooth speaker comes into play as it is not as expensive as those tall speakers, but will also get the job done. If a laptop is still unavailable, tablets would also work.

Yoga-Tab-3-Pro

If you want to go mobile, Lenovo just released its Yoga Tab 3 Pro that concentrates on media consumption and this would work just fine for watching movies. It even has its own built-in projector that you could choose to use. Just throw the movie on a blank wall, turn off the lights, and let the experience begin.

tp-link

Of course, you’d have to have a stable Internet connection in order to stream content without lagging. Right now, PLDT offers high-speed fiber-optic connection in selected areas that offers some of the fastest speeds in the Philippines. But if you belong to the majority of Filipinos without access to that service, having your LTE pocket Wi-Fi would suffice (we’ve listed down some of the best you can get in stores today).

cdrking-video-rocking-chair

So you got your Netflix part all set up and now it’s time to go to the Chill aspect to help you and your date/partner/friend enjoy watching movies. If you can’t afford a La-Z-Boy, you may want to take a look at this Video Rocking Chair that we featured on 10 Cool Gadgets from CD-R King. You can connect it straight to a TV and it has its own built-in speakers with audio controls.

JBL_Pulse2

To set the mood in the room for whatever purpose you have in mind, JBL’s Pulse 2 speaker lights up and is fun to look at with its numerous lighting behaviors. You can choose to place it on a corner table and let it display its somewhat-mesmerizing light show — kind of like a modern-day lava lamp.

philips-hue

There’s also the Philips Hue LED light which acts as an ordinary room light, but has the capability to change colors depending on your mood. The best thing about it is that you can control it straight from your smartphone. From its natural white light, you can instantly switch it to warm red if you’re feeling “romantic”, for example.

So there you have it — an immersive display, good speakers, reliable Internet connection, and additional gadgets that could effectively set the mood for a Netflix and Chill session that’s one for the books.

Have any more gadgets in mind that you think you could use? Share them with everyone below.

Specs-wise, you’ll get an Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of DDR3L RAM, and a battery that Lenovo claims to have a 9-hour life. It’s locally priced at Php49,992.

And if you’re on that price range, the 5th-gen MacBook Air would also make nice alternatives with the 11- and 13-inch models at Php44,990 and Php49,990, respectively.

High-End Laptops

Now, we go to the big players since investing on a really capable laptop is never a bad thing whether you use for work or even playing.

Aside from that, it carries an UltraSharp Full HD display spanning 13.3 inches across, edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass protection, Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD to name some of its key selling points. For what it offers, the Php74,990 price tag is actually not so bad.

lenovo_yoga3pro

Add a little more and you can include the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro on your list for Php76,995. It comes with similar specs as the XPS 13, but with a bigger 512GB of SSD. You may read our review of the ultrabook by clicking the link.

For the gamers out there, feast your eyes on the ASUS ROG G752 Series that comes equipped with a sizeable 17-inch Full HD display backed up by the 6th-gen Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M GPU. Along with those beefy specs come a Php79,995 SRP.
