If you’re a veteran Windows user, then you might’ve already encountered about a freeware called CPU-Z, and chances are you have or still using it on your PC. Photoshop Express now available on Windows 8 & RT

Just this weekend, Adobe has made the toned down version of their popular photo-editing app called Photoshop Express available in the Windows Store which can be installed on any PC running on the latest version of Windows and Windows RT.

The app offers minor photo editing tools like crop, straighten, rotate, flip, and even remove red-eye due to head on flash. In terms of color, it allows users to make some few adjustments to their snaps by changing the White Balance, Contrast and Brightness.

Photoshop Express for Windows 8 and RT is also equipped with a handful of filters referred to as “Looks” for users who wanna add their personal touch to their photos. But the best feature in the package, in my opinion, is the Noise Reduction tool that, well as its name implies, lessens the amount of unwanted grains in your photo which is probably due to a high ISO setting.

The apps is free and can be downloaded through this link.

App in Focus: Photoplay for Android

There’s a new kid in the block that goes by the name of Photoplay and is looking to take on the king of the hill Instagram and be the next big thing in the app industry. Let’s see what this new photo-sharing app has to offer in our full review after the break.

photoplay for android

The App Store and Google Play Store (maybe even other app marketplace) is filled with apps which serve as an alternative to the popular photo-sharing app Instagram. Though many have attempted, none was note-worthy enough to capture the attention of the mobile shutterbugs. That is until Photoplay comes around.

Introduction

Photoplay is a free photo-sharing app that has recently made its debut on App Store, Google Play Store and Windows Marketplace (Windows Phone 7.x for the meantime). Now it may not be that big of deal for some, but the fact that the app made a simultaneous launch on three of the biggest mobile platform to date is a remarkable feat by itself.

registration

Signing up with Photoplay is rather easy. Users can create an account using their existing Twitter or Facebook account. If you have neither of the two (which I highly doubt), you can register using your email address and filling out the required field such as Name and Password.

Interface

After completing the registration, you’ll be greeted with a straightforward dashboard with 5 tabs at the bottom. These buttons’ function, even their respective placements, are identical to that on Instagram. This is a bit disappointing as the developers could’ve come up with something more creative. On the positive note though, it makes it easier for existing IG users to find their way on the new app.

interface

Although these buttons serve the same purpose as those on IG, there are some minor differences on the layout and features. The most significant dissimilarity can be found on the “Discover” (second from the left) and “Camera” (middle) tabs.

The Discover tab is divided in to two sections namely “Top Liked” and “On Map”. The former has three sub-categories that show users pictures with most likes from “Friends”, on a certain “City” and/or from all users under “Everything”.

discover

On Map, on the other hand, is similar to IG’s Photo Map feature which allows users to view geotagged picture on a map. However, instead of showing images per user, On Map shows all the pictures that were geotagged by a Photoplay user.

Now let’s go to the Camera tab. Instead of going straight to the phone’s camera app, users are asked if they want to “Take Photo” or “Choose from Library”. We’re really not a fan of this alteration as it may hinder users from capturing blink-of-an-eye moments because of this added press.

camera1

Fortunately, this slight drawback is evened out by the other features of the camera app. Once you’ve snapped or selected a photo from your gallery, you have an option to select from the three available frames; Vertical, Square and Horizontal. Just to set things clear, the frame that we’re talking about is not the fancy borders you can apply on you image, rather it’s the cropping of the image.

So instead of being limited to a resizable square frame, Photoplay allows images to be framed more appropriately and gives it users more control over their image.

camera2

In addition to framing, the app also has some minor editing features to the further enhance the picture. At the top are four buttons namely Rotate, Vignette, Blur and Brightness/Saturation.

There’s a drop down button at the bottom for Filters which opens up 8 filters (no fancy names, just numbers) that you can apply to your image. Other than its simplicity, we also liked how each filter shows a preview of the image itself after it is applied, instead of generic hot air balloon photos on different hue.

upload

The next window is where users add some information about the picture such as description, location and tags. It also provides users with control over the comments and who can view the image being uploaded.

On the same window, users can also share their snaps on Twitter and Facebook by ticking on the respective icon. If left unticked, the image will only be posted on Photoplay.

What’s missing?

Being a fairly young app, there are some aspects of Photoplay that still needs to be improved on its next version. Here are some of the things we wished to be included on the future builds.

• Deeper integration on the device. Photoplay is not listed under the “Share” options inside the Android Gallery app which would’ve made it easier for users to upload pictures. Also, the app failed notified us when someone liked or commented on our post.
• Integration with other social networking sites. Currently, Facebook, Twitter and VR.com (a Russian SNS) are the only three SNS that users can share their uploads.
• Interface upgrades:
> Orientation. The can only be viewed on portrait as of the moment.
> The interface doesn’t have an option to share/reshare previously uploaded pictures to supported SNS. Matter of fact, the only selection available under “Option” is to delete the uploaded picture.
> Ability to download uploaded pictures.
> THERE’S NO SEARCH BUTTON?! The only search feature is “Search Photo” under Profile tab which is also useless at times.
• Stability. The app crashed a handful of times with no error codes and it automatically signed us out when it does.

Conclusion

I’ve been using Photoplay for the past few days, and I must say that it’s one of the more decent free alternatives to Instagram. Although most of the features of this app remained heavily influenced by Instagram, I really like the additional functionalities on the Camera and Discover tabs.

photoplay

In our opinion, Photoplay still has a long way to go even be in the same league as Instagram, let alone take its position as the go-to-app for photo-sharing. However, it’s off to a great start and we think that with proper financial backing, Photoplay has the potential to be one of top alternatives to IG.

You can try out Photoplay by clicking on the respective links for your platform.

WeChat: One Mobile Messaging App to Rule Them All

Having used a lot of free mobile messaging app in the last couple of years gave us a good idea that one no longer has any need (or much limited need) of SMS when you have unlimited data to communicate with each other or to a group.

In the past couple of years, I’ve started with iMessage on the iPhone, then moved to Viber, then again to WhatsApp and Voxer. Each one has their own particular benefit and, normally, we tend to shift towards a platform where most of our contacts (or close friends in particular) are already familiar with.

Then, WeChat came into the scene and showed up in almost all App Stores locally available — Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Symbian (it actually became the No. 1 App in the iTunes store last week after some heavy endorsements from a lot of local celebrities).

The messaging app is pretty simple and straight-forward but unlike the previous ones that we’ve been using, WeChat incorporates a slew of additional features including location-based social gamification.

Messaging feature is central to the app. Works like threaded SMS and allows from one-on-one conversation or group conversation (I believe it supports up to 50 people in a group chat). The app adds a lot of add-on features that might look similar to other similar apps (much like Emoji icons) but adds far more selection of special emoticons that really reminded us of YM.

Aside from the usual SMS-like service, WeChat also support voice chat and video calls. The voice chat feature allows you to send audio recordings instead of just text so the other party can listen to it instead reading really long messages (I actually find this feature very useful especially when I am driving and have been using it as our group messaging tool for TeamTechSquad with Voxer).

The other social component of WeChat involves location-based discovery like Look Around (shows you other WeChat users within your area, from a few meters away from you up to several kilometers), Moments (an Instagram-Twitter like timeline of places you’ve been to, stuff you’re doing or just a random thought — works like a microblog, actually), and Shake (a fancy way of meeting/discovering users who are also shaking their WeChat phone at the same time as you do).

I must admit that some of the core features are somewhat gimmicky and bordering on the stalkerish side but you always have the option not to use them and just stick to the messaging functions if you’re that paranoid about your whereabouts.

By the looks of it, WeChat attempts to consolidate the nice features we’ve already seen with the likes of iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber and Voxer and put them in one single app. They have over 300 million downloads already but I have yet to see some close friends and contacts pop up in my recommended list.

You can download WeChat on your iOS devices here and your Android devices here. You can also search for it on the BB App World, the Ovi Store and the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Disclosure: WeChat is a banner display advertiser on this blog and we will be using WeChat in some of out future contests and giveaways. Watch out for them soon. Hint: Download WeChat and add us up in your contact list.

Mozilla Firefox 19 now out, PDF viewer in tow

Mozilla has recently released the latest version of their web browser, the Firefox 19. And while the new release doesn’t have too many new things to offer for its users, Mozilla’s upgraded browser is equipped with an HTML5-based PDF viewer right out of the gate.

The said feature was first introduced in the beta version of Firefox 18 and was expected to be released along with the final build. However, Mozilla decided to not include it on the previous release (not sure why) and pushed it to this version.

Firefox for PC

Apart from the addition of built-in PDF viewer, Mozilla also addressed some of the bugs (three to be exact) that were spotted on the previous version of the browser, two of which are causing the browser to malfunction during launch. The full run down of changelog can be found here.

Along with the upgrades that Mozilla have done on the desktop browser, they also made some changes on its Android counterpart. The new Firefox 19 for Android now has theme support which allows users to alter the browser’s looks. Moreover, it now has support for Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese localizations. They’ve also fixed a pair of bugs in these latest build.

Firefox for Android

But the most significant upgrade that this new version has is Mozilla’s decision to lower down the minimum requirements (600MHz, 512MB, HVGA resolution) in order for users to use the browser on their mobile device. Other changes can be found here.

Firefox users should be automatically notified about this update. Now for those of you who want to try out the Firefox 19 on your PC, you can download the installer here. As for the Firefox 19 for Android, you can download the app here.
