Facebook to launch $1M per day video ads

Facebook is really doing its best to cash out on its massive user base through ads. First by sugar-coating it with cool features like, let’s see.. uhmm.. Facebook Home?? Then eventually bombarding users with ads in the near future. While I don’t blame Facebook for doing such as it lets you use its services for free, the social media titan is planning a more invasive way of blasting ads on your face through Timeline video ads.

Video formats are yet to be finalized but according to AdAge, it can be “presented in a video player that expands beyond the main news-feed real estate to cover the right- and left-hand rails of users’ screens on the desktop version of Facebook.” A mobile version was also reported to be in the works. The ads will be capped at 3 per day, each lasting 15 seconds and will be targeting users from four categories: women over 30, women under 30, men over 30, and men under 30.

These type of ads are more likely to cater companies with huge marketing budgets as Facebook was reported to have an ad rate of at least $1 million PER DAY.

Facebook Home is now available for Android

The HTC First & Facebook Home are scheduled to be launched on April 12, and it did – but there are a few catches. The HTC First is a US story, while Facebook Home is… well, the same story too. You can get it on the Play Store for free if you’re located in the US. For Filipinos, not now, not here.

Thankfully, an APK is already out for us non-US residents. You can get it here. To have it working, you’ll need to update the Facebook app for a few permissions, and you’re good to go. Sorta. You’ll need a Samsung Galaxy S4, S3 Note 2 or an HTC One X/One X+ for it to be operational; otherwise this will be displayed as I tried it for my Nexus 4 (which was one of the supported devices from the earlier leak).

So for those selected Samsung and HTC users, why not give it a try? Some of you might change views about the new Android launcher.

Facebook’s big announcement, the Facebook phone?

This is probably one of the rumors that won’t just die. Ever since the HTC ChaCha and Salsa, there has been a long line of speculations about when the next Facebook phone will be out – and little by little, the puzzle pieces are forming the big picture as inch closer to the official announcement.

Facebook has already sent an invite for an event this April 4 (Pacific Time), with the words “Come see our new home on Android.”

In our opinion, the announcement will most likely be a software rather than a handset – which is probably a launcher app for Android, or an Android phone running a Facebook UI. HTC has been long speculated to be the manufacturer of the said device, which is entirely plausible when you look at their past with Facebook and their dedication to a social-networking UI (Sense).

“A Facebook phone just doesn’t make any sense.”

-Mark Zuckerberg

The man behind Facebook has stated it last year that a handset doesn’t make any sense, but he explained that he wanted deep integration with mobile devices – which is why we’re really looking at software here, instead of a phone.

Unwired View gathered some of the patents that has been filed to give a glimpse of what we could be looking at soon, and it screams “Facebook Phone!” all around. We might be looking at a Facebook Feed on the lockscreen, a Facebook-integrated phonebook/dialer and a modified camera app.

EVleaks tweeted an image of what is reported to be the HTC First, with no HTC branding on the phone itself. Sites have reported this to be the Facebook phone along with its rumored specs. We are a bit skeptical about the said leak as it seems like the HTC First moniker was just placed on top of the image.

The hardware side of things is still hard to grasp for us at present. The push forward that Facebook is probably aiming at is for you to be more integrated with Facebook – that you’re going to base your contacts on your friends list, your apps on Facebook apps, and your email on example@facebook.com.

A better Facebook app would be nice, since it’s still occasionally slow on loading stuff. Do you want a new Facebook launcher for your Android phone? Or rather, a reasonably priced Facebook phone? We’re going to find out soon, so stay tuned.

Facebook for Android receives big update

Facebook for Android is now on version 2.0 and is expected to increase the speed and performance of the app – by a lot.

There is no drastic change in the design and the UI when we downloaded the update, but it surely did what the update specified it would do. It increased loading speeds by a mile.

Facebook’s Android app wasn’t the best out there quite a while back. In fact, we never found ourselves using the Facebook app alone; we had apps like Friendcaster on the sideline for some other purposes.

Facebook

The previous versions of the app used HTML5 and some codes that enabled different Android devices to work with it – that is why it was so slow. Now, the new Facebook app for Android is built from the ground up. Meaning, the codes are different which will resort to faster performances.

We noticed that it was indeed fast. Scrolling was smooth and loading times were short. Facebook is really trying to keep the grasp that they have on their users, and it is working. The Facebook app has undergone through a lot of updates. It’s not the perfect app, but it’s trying to be and it’s almost there.

The update/download is available at the Google Play Store.
