Asus Zenfone Zoom to be priced at Php26,995

Asus Philippines is set to launch the Zenfone Zoom in the country next week but there’s one very critical information that’s still missing — the retail price. So we asked around the some retail store point to a possible suggested retail price of Php26,995 for the 128GB model.

The Zenfone Zoom will also be powered by a slightly newer and faster Intel Atom Z3590 quad-core chip with a maximum clock speed of 2.5GHz per core.

The Php26,995 is actually the same price that Asus CEO Jerry Shen told us (we quoted his stating a Php27k SRP) last year during our interview (see here).

Asus ZenFone Zoom specs:
5.5 inch IPS LCD display @ 1920×1080 pixels, 401ppi

ASUS Zenfone Max Hands-On, First Impressions

Created to solve the woes of running out of battery when no smartphone chargers are around, the ASUS Zenfone Max carries a 5000mAh battery that the company claims could last for 38 days of standby time. We’ve got an early preview of the unit before the company releases it this weekend and here is our quick hands-on of the device.

asus-zenfone-max-review-philippines-11

Coming from the same Zenfone family, the Max has an identical face along with other models in the series. The display spans 5.5 inches across and is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 just like the Zenfone Laser. Down below are the usual capacitive buttons that are no longer visible when you use the phone in the dark.

Looking at it from the side, it has a slightly thicker profile than other Zenfone 2 models due to its massive battery. The increase in width isn’t that much noticeable, but it’s the weight that will get your attention at 202 grams. Again, the battery is responsible.

The body is made with metal that rigidly supports the chassis of the device. It is then sandwiched by the display and a plastic back cover. All the buttons are kept on the upper right side. Here we have the volume rocker and power/lock button.

Breaking the all-metal frame is a single 3.5mm audio jack up top and a microphone pinhole alongside a microUSB port at the bottom for charging and transferring files.

The Zenfone Max has also been blessed with the same laser autofocus technology that appeared in the Zenfone Laser, helping you focus on subjects much faster. Together with dual-tone LED flashes, the handset aims to provide its users capable optics at their disposals whenever they demand it. Additionally, the back cover is textured and has a rubbery coating to it but is made of plastic.

Meanwhile, we still have the back-firing speakers located at the lower end of its rear.

asus-zenfone-max-review-philippines-3

Popping off the cover, we will be exposed to the dual-SIM slots along with the microSD slot for expansion. Also seen here is the Zenfone Max’s non-removable 5000mAh battery. According to the company, the reason why they made it so is to ensure that this 1-cell battery gets the right voltage, in addition to other safety purposes. Also, since this specific model is one of the first units to be handed out, the battery is still exposed. The final version will have their batteries in black wrapping.

asus-zenfone-max-review-philippines-13

In general, the Max slightly carries the familiar look of Zenfones but is heavier and chunkier than the previous models due to the size of its battery.  It’s not totally a bad thing since, in return, you get more power for your handset to last longer.

ASUS Zenfone Max (ZC550KL) specifications:
5.5-inch HD IPS display @ 1280 x 720 resolution, 267ppi
Gorilla Glass 4
64-bit 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor
Adreno 306 GPU
2GB RAM
8GB/16GB internal storage
Expandable up to 128GB via microSD
13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, laser autofocus, and dual-tone LED flash
5MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture
GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS
Bluetooth 4.0, A2DP, EDR
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Hotspot
Dual-SIM, dual standby
4G LTE
5000mAh Li-Po battery
156 x 77.5 x 10.6mm
202 grams
Android 5.0 Lollipop with ZenUI

We’ll be bringing it out of town during ASUS’s media launch (where we’ll also get to play with the Zenfone Zoom) at Sinulog Festival in Cebu City. They will also announce the local price of both handsets during the event. Stay tuned!

Shuttle XPC Nano NCO1U Quick Review

When you talk about a PC, typically the first thought would be of those big bulky enclosures with big fans that require some floor or desk space. That’s not the case when it comes to the Shuttle XPC Nano NCO1U. This device is a full-fledged PC small and portable enough to be mounted behind a monitor and carried inside a bag.

qube shuttle xpc nano_1

Design and Construction

The Shuttle XPC Nano features a slim, square, 0.5-liter body measuring 141mm in length and width and 29mm in thickness, this makes the XPC Nano discrete and unobtrusive as you can easily place it tiny spaces like under the TV or behind a monitor with the help of a mount.

qube shuttle xpc nano_6

The body is mostly plastic with a glossy finish and copper color accents. The top side is where most of the glossy plastic is along with the XPC branding. This part is prone to ugly smudges and fingerprints so you’re bound to wipe it after some touches.

qube shuttle xpc nano_2

Up front is the SD card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, HDD LED, and the Power Button / Status LED.

qube shuttle xpc nano_5

On the left side we have the Serial COM Port and thermal vent.

qube shuttle xpc nano_3

On the right is the K-Lock Security Slot and another thermal vent.

qube shuttle xpc nano_4

Take a look at the back and you will see the power jack, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, LAN port, two USB 2.0 ports, and the headphone / Line-out jack. Underneath are four rubber feet and some screws that you need to remove in case you need to access the internals.

qube shuttle xpc nano_8

Overall, we like the build and look of the XPC Nano. You can place it beside or under a sleek-looking HDMI-enabled TV and it would blend well. If you have a small desk space, it wouldn’t be a problem due to its small size. There’s also a stand included so you can place it in a vertical position.

The only thing we didn’t like in our unit is the small opening of the panel at the rear under the ports. It could be because of the size of the hard drive installed. We hope that this is an isolated case. Other than that, everything checks out.

Setup and Configuration

The Shuttle XPC Nano is already pre-built as it has its own motherboard and processor. All you need to do is pick the amount of RAM (4GB, 8GB, 16GB) and hard drive. In the case of our unit, it’s 8GB DDR3 Sodimm and 1TB HDD (installed in two partitions).

qube shuttle xpc nano_11

Our unit came from Qube so you can pick a configuration on their website and get an estimate. You can also order an A4Tech keyboard and a mouse. For the monitor, you will have to provide your own but you can also get one from Qube.

qube shuttle xpc nano_10

Looking at the cost of our configuration, it is priced at Php15,250. A Microsoft Windows 7 Professional is available with no extra cost but you may opt not to get it in case you already have your own installer.

Performance

The XPC Nano is powered by an Intel Celeron 3205U clocked at 1.5GHz, Intel HD Graphics, 8GB RAM, and a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The CPU is entry-level so don’t expect it to play the latest games out there.

qube shuttle xpc nano_7

What it’s good at office and multimedia tasks like web browsing, MS Office, and video playback. You can use it as your multimedia hub and store all your video and music files. Just connect it to the TV via HDMI and a sound system and you got yourself a home entertainment package.

qube shuttle xpc nano_9

What we recommend though is to install or upgrade to Windows 10 as Windows 7 is already showing its age. Also get a wireless mouse and keyboard to eliminate clutter and allow you to work or navigate from a distance.

Conclusion

The Shuttle XPC Nano is a nice device to have especially for light users who don’t like a bulky PC. It has a good build, decent configuration and comes with a low price. It’s not going to play the latest games in the market but it can get office things done and become an entertainment hub at the same time.

The Shuttle XPC Nano NCO1U is available for purchase at Qube Asia. See listing here.

Shuttle XPC Nano NCO1U specs:
1.5GHz Intel Celeron 3205U Processor
Intel HD Graphics
4GB, 8GB, 16GB RAM
1TB Mobile SATA HDD
2.5″ 7mm HDD / SSD drive bays
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac
Bluetooth
HDMI
mini DisplayPort
2x USB 3.0
2x USB 2.0
Ethernet
DC-in Jack
Headphone+Mic in combo jack
RS232
Kensington Lock
Realtek ALC269 HD Audio
Supports Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
141 x 141 x 29 mm

What we liked:
* Good build and design
* Small and portable
* Decent performance for its class
* Plenty of ports

What we didn’t like:
* Comes with old Windows 7 OS
* Keyboard and mouse sold separately

Comparison: Lenovo Lemon 3 vs Xiaomi Redmi 3

Lenovo has announced today the Lemon 3 smartphone in China. It packs a 5-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 octa-core CPU, and 2GB RAM. If that sounds familiar, that is because there’s another recently-announced smartphone that carries a similar configuration – the Xiaomi Redmi 3. So for this article, we’re going to compare the two to see which one looks better on paper.

To start with, both smartphones have dual-SIM support with LTE, have the same CPU, RAM, and internal storage, They also have the same display size at 5 inches, however, the Lenovo Lemon 3 wins when it comes to resolution with Full HD versus Xiaomi Redmi 3’s HD.

Both smartphones have 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras. The Redmi 3 though has Phase-Detect Autofocus. The Lemon 3 might just have regular autofocus. But when it comes to audio the Lemon 3’s is powered by Dolby with Maxx Audio.

The battery is another big difference. Lenovo opted for a 2,750mAh on the Lemon 3 which can be considered below average in today’s standards. The Redmi 3, on the other hand, has a commendable 4,100mAh.

As for the build, the Lemon 3 and Redmi 3 sport metal bodies with the Lemon 3 being thinner and lighter which is understandable considering it has a smaller battery.

The Lenovo Lemon 3 and Xiaomi Redmi 3 are priced at RMB 699 or around Php5,000 when converted. No word yet on local availability.
