DTC Jupiter Plus Quick Review

Lazada Philippines

Last week, we reviewed the 6-inch DTC Fiesta Plus, and now we’re going to take a look at the company’s handier and slightly more affordable device – the Jupiter Plus. It has a 4.7-inch HD IPS display, a body that looks similar to the HTC One, and a price tag that is under Php8k.

DTC obviously likes borrowing designs from top mobile brands. If the DTC Fiesta Plus looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Mega, the DTC Jupiter Plus is an attempt to look like the HTC One. On the front is the 4.7-inch HD IPS display. Above it is a silver strip that houses the 3.2 megapixel front camera, earpiece, and notifications light. Down below is another metallic strip and the pinhole for the mic.

On the left side is the volume rocker. Right on top is the headset jack and the power/lock button while down at the bottom is the microUSB port. Found at the back is the removable back plate that houses the 13 megapixel rear camera, LED flash, and the speaker.

On hand, the DTC Jupiter Plus is comfortable to hold because of its small size and the slightly curved back. The metallic finish gives an illusion that it is clad in metal when in fact it’s all plastic. On the bright side, the Jupiter Plus feels sturdy and light.

As for the display, it has acceptable sharpness with accurate colors and decent viewing angles. 4.7-inches may be small in today’s standards but it has an HD resolution which equates to a pixel density of 312ppi so it’s not really a deal-breaker.

The Jupiter Plus comes with a 13 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 3.2 megapixel front camera. Auto focus is slow but is capable of producing photos that are good enough to be posted on social media sites. Take a look at a couple of sample shots below. (Click for a larger image)

Powering the device is a 1.3GHz MT6582 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM which is decent for an entry-level device. However, the OS is stuck with an outdated Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Performance is okay but it would definitely get a performance boost if it has KitKat on board. Take a look at the benchmark results below:

* AnTuTu – 19,859
* Quadrant Standard – 7,054
* NenaMark2 – 54.8fps

The Jupiter Plus is equipped with a 2,200mAh removable battery. We ran our routine battery test which involves putting it on Airplane mode and playing a Full HD video on loop in 50% brightness and volume with a headset plugged in. The result is 8.33 hours worth of playback which is average.

Overall, the DTC Jupiter Plus is a decent device that with an interesting design, easy-to-hold body, and acceptable performance. However, it carries a high SRP of Php7,990 for a Jelly Bean-powered device. Even with their limited time offer of Php5,990, it will have a hard time competing with affordable offerings from other brands like the ASUS Zenfone 5 series which is priced under Php7k.

DTC Jupiter Plus specs:
4.7-inch HD IPS display, 312ppi
1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad-core CPU
Mali-400 MP GPU
1GB RAM
8GB internal storage (6.22GB usable)
up to 32GB via microSD
13 megapixel rear camera w/ LED flash
3.2 megapixel front camera
Dual-SIM, Dual-Standby
3G HSPA+
WiFi
Bluetooth
GPS, A-GPS
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
2,200mAh removable battery
