Real-life hoverboard by Lexus shown off in skate park

We’ve been hearing news about hoverboards in the past, but so far we’ve seen nothing but concepts. This time, a real-life working hoverboard was made by automaker Lexus that’s actually usable in a controlled environment. Check out this footage of the floating board used by a professional skater.

The test run was held in a specially-made, 200-meter wide, skate park. It was reportedly built with permanent magnets which allow the superconducting hoverboard to float over the entire place smoothly and even in water.

Lexus worked closely together with scientists and poured time of more than a year from the conceptualization to producing the smoke-dispensing unit. This smoke, according to the source, is due to the fact that the internals of the board being needed to be cooled to minus 197 degrees Celsius using liquid nitrogen.

“The magnetic field from the track is effectively ‘frozen’ into the superconductors in the board, maintaining the distance between the board and track – essentially keeping the board in a hover,” Evico’s CEO, Dr. Oliver de Haas, said in an email. “The force is strong enough that the rider can stand and even jump on the board.”

Above is the video showing pro skater Ross McGouran riding the floatboard and below is the behind-the-scenes video that shows the process of how this ground-breaking trickboard came to existence.

Lastly, it’s unfortunate that the Lexus hoverboard won’t be up for sale commercially…or at least not as of the moment. Here’s to looking forward to that one day we’ll be able to test one.

The Water Lamp is a paper that transforms into a functioning lamp

Are you an adventurer that spends most of your time outdoors? Here’s something nifty from The North Face — the Water Lamp. It basically is a piece of paper that you fold and use water to scientifically light and use at night during your camping trips.

With travelers in mind, The North Face’s Water Lamp is thin enough to slide into any backpack or travel bag since it is essentially just a sheet of paper. To use, it has an instruction to fold the paper in certain ways and make it stand like a lamp, use water on a specific spot, and it will begin lighting up so you can use it to light a spot while on the great outdoors.

As mentioned in the instructions, the paper illuminates because of the application of water as it “allows electrons to flow from the zinc to the copper in the paper. This electrical current powers the lamp.”

Indeed, it is a handy tool to have around since not only does it provide light, but it is also eco-friendly as it doesn’t require any electricity to operate.

Therese “Gang” Badoy Capati, who posted it on her Twitter account (@gangbadoy), mentions that it is currently available at The North Face in Shangri-La Mall, Manila. We’ve contacted the company and inquired of its price.

A bird was found with a camera, GPS, and bombs

A recent report from Afghanistan police states that they have discovered a large bird wearing a vest filled with bombs. A closer look after the explosion revealed what could be a camera and GPS in addition to other metal parts. With these components easily seen in smartphones, it’s possible that these are homemade and detonated remotely as an act of terrorism.

Faryab, a province in Afghanistan oppressed heavily by the Taliban, is where the eagle-looking foreign bird with a suicide vest was found. The local police found it suspicious since attached to it was an antenna. They decided to shoot it which then exploded afterwards. Thankfully no one was reported to be hurt, but what they saw after could mean that it was there for a purpose.

“We are gathering all the stuff, but found parts of what looks to be GPS and a small camera,” said a provincial police chief. He added the possibility of the bird being deployed on a surveillance mission. Is combining today’s technology with animals the next form of terrorism?

Below is the video of the bird with the suicide gadgets still attached. We hope he already got his 72 virgins in bird heaven.
