What’s your best Black Friday deal yet?

While a lot of people are celebrating Thanksgiving Day in the US, it has been overshadowed by Black Friday deals with a lot of products on sale with deep discounts.

Amazon has been my go to place to shop online and have the items shipped to my friend in the US for forwarding later on via balik bayan box.

Last night, some pretty good deals appeared on Amazon and one such item is the Canon S100 which was selling for just $229 or about Php9,400 {see listing here}.

I also included the Kindle Fire HD which is sold for $199 (see here) for a total of $428 (Php17k) for both.

Incidentally, I still has some discount vouchers in my Amazon account so I was able to apply that and drop the total price for both to just $254 (Php10,400). Now that’s a great Black Friday deal!

Just the other day, Apple Philippines ran a Black Friday sale on their online store with discounts of up to Php5,000 {see our story here}.

Been doing this for the last 3 years or so and the charm has never faded. Anybody out there got really good Black Friday deals already?

Microsoft working on Project Glass competitor

Microsoft just revealed that they applied for a patent that features wearable glass technology, similar to Google’s Project Glass.

Just recently, Google showcased Project Glass and it wowed the world. It was even thought to be impossible and unbelievable. Google even engaged in fashion shows just to attract more people.

Microsoft takes a different approach. Project Glass is meant to be used whether while in motion or while staying in place; Microsoft’s patent focuses on giving out information while watching a concert, a sports game or just any show you’d watch.

The company just started making their own hardware such as the Surface, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if a Surface phone or SmartGlasses (Xbox reference) came out sooner or later. For the meantime, the patent application could give us a clue that the Redmond giant could be indeed working on their variant of Project Glass.

While the future of wearable tech is still far away, it is good to see innovations coming out from the big guns. When these products come out however, we’d bet that prices would soar through the roof.

On the other hand, we still think that it wouldn’t be advisable to use these kinds of technology in the Philippines (not now anyway) as wearable tech might be easy to snatch.

Nevertheless, we’re getting there. In a few years, maybe we’ll get to see Apple’s version of the tech; iGlass anyone? (Pun intended)

Asus outs 450Mbps+1.3Gbps RT-AC66U Wireless Router

Asus Philippines announces their latest high-end router offering, the RT-AC66U. But don’t for one second think that this router is just your average networking device as this bad boy enables you to do more than connect multiple devices.

The first thing you need to know about it is that it’s an 802.11ac dual-band router. For the uninitiated, these routers are capable of insane speeds of up to 1.3GB/S (three-stream). To put thing in perspective, your current Wireless-N routers has a cap of 450Mbps (three-stream) while the 802.11ac can outdo that by three folds.

AC66U

And because of its blazing fast transfer rate, 5G routers (another term for 802.11ac routers) are more power-efficient compared to our Wireless-N routers. How so? Simple, the faster the file transfer the lesser the energy the router consumes.

But that’s not all. In fact, the ASUS RT-AC66U has a whole bag of tricks to satisfy all your networking needs. We’ll not go too detailed about its other features as we’ll reserve that for our full review, so do watch out for that.

Lastly, this router is also equipped with the ASUS AiCloud technology which adds a handful of other neat features to the already capable device. Some of these additional features include SmartSync which enables users to easily sync their offline files to their ASUS WebStorage account, and SmartAccess which allows users to access their files at home from virtually anywhere using their tablet or smartphone.

Asus RT-AC66U specs:
Network Standard: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/u
Data Rate: 450+1300Mbps
Antenna: 3x (detachable)
Operating Frequency: 2.4Ghz, 5.1~ 5.8Ghz
Encryption: 64-bit WEP, 128-bit WEP, WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise
Ports: 1x WAN, 4x LAN, 2x USB2.0
Dimension: 207 x 148.8 x 35.5 mm
Weight: 450g

The only thing that would keep you from getting this Asus RT-AC66U is the price — suggested retail price is Php11,990.

Lenovo ThinkPad Twist lands for Php56k

Lenovo’s other line of ultrabook comes in a twisted form factor and calls it the ThinkPad Twist. The mechanism is very similar to the laptop-tablet hybrid we’ve seen from many years ago.

The ThinkPad Twist has an odd 12.5-inch display and looks like a regular ultrabook but comes with a hinge that allows you to twist the screen around and close the lid down to position it in a tablet form.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S230u specs:
12.5″ HD IPS multi-touch display with Gorilla Glass
Intel Core i5 3317U, up to 2.6GHz
Intel HD Graphics 4000
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB HDD + 24GB mSATA
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Gigabit LAN
Bluetooth 4.0
4-cell Li-Ion battery
Windows 8

Lenovo promises up to 7 hours of battery life on a single charge with the ThinkPad Twist.

The specs are pretty decent but with a retail price of Php56,000, we’re expecting they should have just used a full SSD storage instead.

Jellybean update for Samsung Tab 2 7.0 WiFi

Slowly but surely, Samsung has been seeding the Jelly bean update for the devices included on their list. The most recent addition to the Jelly bean club is the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 WiFi (GT-P3110) who joins the SGS3 and Galaxy Note 10.1.

Tab2

Some French users have already received and it is can be applied via Samsung Kies or OTA update. It’s a bit fascinating though why Samsung released the update for the P3110 and not for its data-enabled counterpart the P3100.

There’s no word when the update will reach our shore and if the GT-P3100 will ever get the update. But as always, we’ll spread the word out once it does.
