All Zenfone 2 Lasers Compared

With the launch of the new Zenfone 2 Laser variant just recently, there are now a total of three models under this series. They all sport the same camera with laser autofocus that ASUS claims to have a 0.03-second focus time, but their display sizes and some internals vary. Here are the differences and similarities of the handsets.

Differences of the ZE601KL variant:

  • Bigger display size
  • Higher screen resolution
  • Higher pixel density
  • Faster processor
  • Better GPU
  • Bigger RAM
  • Bigger storage capacity
  • Updated connectivity
  • Heavier
  • Taller, wider, but thinner

Same specs/features carried out:

  • Gorilla Glass 4
  • Rear and front camera
  • Dual-SIM capability
  • 4G LTE
  • 3000mAh battery (from 5.5-inch model)
  • Operating system

We see here that the latest and biggest model got a bunch of beefier internals jammed into it — including a faster processor, bigger RAM, and double the storage space compared to the previous iterations. There is also a significant difference in its asking price (compared to the initial pricing, at least).

If you were to pick what would you choose between these three, all things considered?

The Galaxy A5 (2016) gets a screen size bump to 5.2 inches and now sports a full HD resolution. With it is a faster octa-core processor running at 1.6GHz but like with the A7, it is yet an unknown chipset. While the megapixel count of the rear camera remains the same, the optical image stabilization feature is a great welcome. Memory and storage is still at 2GB and 16GB. The battery, however, received an extra 600mAh juice, maxing it out at 2900mAh. The device is noticeably taller (144.8mm vs 139.3mm) and thicker (7.3mm vs 6.7mm) compared to the earlier version.

The Galaxy A3 (2016) now has a slightly bigger screen and it comes with an improved resolution to HD from qHD. The chipset is still the same Snapdragon 410 but has a faster clock speed at 1.5GHz. The camera also received an upgrade to a better 13-megapixel sensor. RAM and internal storage remained the same though. Lastly, the battery is now larger which could equate to longer endurance.

Both smartphones will be available first in China this month and Samsung has yet to announce the pricing. Local availability is expected when the device moves out of the Chinese market.

To start, the new Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) still has the same screen size and resolution but as you can see from the image above, it has a thinner bezel over the last year’s version. It even has a different chipset inside but it is still unknown since Samsung just said it is an octa-core chipset running at 1.6GHz. Last year’s model has a speedier 1.8GHz Exynos 5 Octa 5430. Although, the new model now has a bigger 3GB RAM and a faster LTE Cat6 radio. The camera is still a 13-megapixel sensor but with optical image stabilization and a large f/1.9 aperture. It also has a bigger battery rated at 3300mAh. Due to this, it’s now thicker at 7.3mm vs 6.3mm and heavier at 172g vs 141g.

The 2016 version will ship with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box which is disappointing since Android 6.0 Marshmallow is already out. The new Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) will be available first in China this month before heading to the rest of the market. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Being the new powerhouse among the three, the Mate 8 stands out with its specifications. It has the biggest 4GB RAM and has a better 16-megapixel camera module. It also boots the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow version. And let’s not forget the home-baked Kirin 950 chipset with a so-called i5 co-processor that should give powerful yet efficient performance on the Mate 8.

The last year’s Mate 7 only stands out with its slightly bigger battery with an additional 100mAh while the Mate S boast a more favorable AMOLED display with 401ppi.

The Huawei Mate 8 is already available in China and pricing starts at $480 or roughly Php 22,600 in local currency. International availability is expected to be announced in January of next year.
