This site guides you in choosing your next smartphone

With all the launches and announcements left and right, it’s hard to keep track of all the smartphones available in the market. Thanks to this simple website, choosing your next smartphone might be easier this time around.

The site is just a comparison chart. What’s neat about it is you can put in data as filters if you’re looking for a certain specification on your next device. For example, if you want a phone with at least 16GB storage space then you can adjust the slider and it will eliminate all other devices with less than the set amount of internal storage.

You can set the filters for storage space, RAM, resolution, screen size, weight, and even pricing although it’s in US dollars. It’s important to note that not every device is available here, but still, it’s a pretty helpful tool for scouring through devices.

Additionally, the website doesn’t only feature smartphones. You can switch to different charts like laptops, MP3 players, and even flash drives to compare and help you decide on your next purchase.

It’s pretty easy to navigate so just check it out for yourself.

Optical vs Laser Mouse: Which Do You Need?

Gone are the days when we use a mouse with a physical ball under it. For the young readers here, you may even raise an eyebrow in confusion as to what I was referring to. This is because when you’re out to buy a peripheral mouse nowadays you’d only have to choose between an optical or a laser one. But for those who couldn’t seem to fully grasp how these two differ, check out our quick guide on whether an optical or laser mouse should be the right tool for you.

Before we begin defining the two, let’s first understand a basic technical term that would help us in this topic. When talking about a specific mouse, we always hear the term DPI. What is it, really?

DPI

DPI or dots per inch measures the sensitivity of the mouse. The higher the dpi count, the more sensitive it will be to small movements. A higher dpi also means more accuracy which is useful for gaming (like for aiming the gun in FPS titles, navigating menu, etc). In addition, it is useful for high-resolution displays like Full HD or UHD screens (with Dell just launching a slew of 4K and 5K resolution monitors) since the mouse will be sensitive enough to go end-to-end the screen, even when using multiple displays, without having to move your mouse across the entire table.

So does this mean a mouse with higher dpi is automatically better than that with lower dots per inch count? Not entirely. In contrast to using high-resolution displays, if you’re just on a 720p or lower resolution then it’s not wise to invest on an expensive mouse with high dpi since you won’t be able to utilize its features. Having a high count of dpi on a low-res screen will still be accurate, but will easily send your cursor flying away with little movement. You can compensate this by lowering the mouse sensitivity in the computer’s settings, but then again why would you get a highly-sensitive mouse if you’ll just limit it, right?

Now let’s get on with these two kinds of mice:

Optical

Optical mice use a couple of LED lights and a small camera to capture images of what’s underneath them and send data to the computer to register movement across the screen. This means that an optical mice can only be used on opaque surfaces. An ordinary optical mouse usually have around 200 – 800 dpi which is fine if you’re just on the Internet and casually using your computer. There are, however, gaming optical mice that offer up to 4000 dpi for better sensitivity and accuracy.

Laser

Laser mice, on the other hand, is a newer technology that utilizes infrared laser lights and, unlike its optical cousin, it can be used on a wider range of surfaces like mirrors or glass tables. There are even special laser mice that claim to be able to register movement on almost any surface. These kinds also promise to be more accurate than its optical counterpart, with dpi reaching all the way to 8000+ (Rapoo’s ambidextrous V900 reaches 8200 dpi). It is also priced higher than most optical mice. Again, as we’ve mentioned earlier, higher dpi doesn’t equate to a better mouse.

So Which Mouse is for You?

Personally, I still prefer playing on an optical mouse with a decent dpi count (around 1200 – 2000 at the most) since I find it more stable and accurate. I recently used a laser gaming mouse and experienced the cursor to be a bit shaky when I try to aim for icons. This might just be my personal experience and doesn’t mean opticals are better than lasers — in the end it still boils down to your preference.

To sum it up, the ideal mouse for you depends on the application or kind of game you’re playing (if you need a lot of accuracy and speed-scrolling), the resolution of the display you’ll use it on, and of course how you personally want your mouse to handle.

For the PC gamers out there, what mouse preference do you have in playing your games? We’re curious to know.

5 “innovations” for iPhone 6 not new to Android phones

Lazada Philippines

Apple already unveiled its newest handsets – the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Along with them come features that are pleasant and new to the ears of iFans but have already been experienced by Android users for quite some time now. We list down these features for comparison’s sake.

Ready? Let’s begin the list!

HD/Full HD display

iphone 6 resolution

The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 was introduced to have an HD display with a resolution of 1334 x 750. It’s definitely an improvement since prior to that, the iPhone 5S already maxed out at 1136 x 640. The bigger iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, boasts a Full HD 1080p display which is the company’s first on a handset.

The thing is, we’ve already been surrounded by HD and Full HD displays for years now. Google is even making 2K resolution (2560 x 1440) sort of the standard for flagships today. There’s the Galaxy Note 4 with Quad HD resolution as well as the LG G3 which sports the same 5.5-inch display as the iPhone 6 Plus but also comes with a 2K resolution screen.

NFC

iphone_visa_mobile_payment

Android smartphones widely use NFC today for a number of functions – they can share photos, videos, contacts, documents, and even pair their devices with other gadgets that support the same technology. Again, this is something new for Apple and they just limited its function for transactions with the introduction of Apple Pay – something that Google has already been doing and even strengthening when KitKat rolled out.

Wi-Fi calling

google-voice

As far as we could remember there have been apps for Android since late 2013 that utilize Google Voice so users can call specific numbers using their Wi-Fi connection. During Apple’s keynote early yesterday, the company angled this feature as a means of being able to still make an outgoing call even when you’re at a place with no signal like a basement with Wi-Fi present. This is a pretty smart move for Apple, but a few years late.

OIS

HTC OIS

For the larger iPhone 6 Plus, it carries something that its smaller sibling doesn’t: a landscape view of navigating through the phone and OIS or optical image stabilization. This basically makes the camera’s sensor move sideways and up and down to compensate for the hand’s shake while taking photos and recording videos, and as a result the 6 Plus produces sharper images. But yes, this is nothing new for smartphones like the HTC One (M7).

QuickType

 From memecenter.com

Apple is proud to introduce that the annoying autocorrect feature (that sometimes makes you type “play” instead of “okay” or “hemp” instead of “home”) should now be minimized thanks to its predictive typing method that studies and learns the words and phrases you usually type. There will now be a bar over the keyboard that shows words that you’ll likely use. In addition, iOS8 now supports third-party keyboard installations – just like its Android counterpart.

android_ios

The list doesn’t end there. There are more iPhone 6/6 Plus features that have been present in Google’s ecosystem. A guy named Ron even posted a photo on the Internet enumerating some of them (above) comparing the newly announced iPhone to a 2012 Nexus 4.

So why are people still going loco over the new iPhones?

Right now you’re probably thinking that Apple is just copying off whatever makes Google special, and you may be right. But what makes a lot of people crazy for the new iPhones? Maybe another perspective of looking at it is because these people already love what Apple has done with its iPhone to begin with. While adding these features previously exclusive on Android phones are a big plus and maybe it’s like adding more to their already “awesome” phone which altogether works better for them.

What do you think?

ASUS Zenfone 5 vs Xiaomi Mi 3: Specs comparison

ASUS Philippines last night announced the new Zenfone lineup which consists of the Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5, and Zenfone 6. These smartphnones, like the talk-of-the-town Xiaomi Mi 3, carry decent specs for an affordable asking price. That’s why we pit the Mi 3 with its fellow 5-inch counterpart, the Zenfone 5 to know who among the two have the best bang for the buck.

ASUSZenfone5_XiaomiMi3_comparison

The Zenfone 5 has similarities with the Mi 3 like the Corning Gorilla Glass 3-reinforced display and 2GB RAM. But in other aspects the Mi 3 proves to have better specs: There’s the faster processor, higher megapixel count, bigger internal storage, and better display. Specs alone dictates the Mi 3 to be the winner but then comes pricing. The Mi 3, though already competitively-priced at Php10,599 is way more expensive than the Zenfone which is only at Php6,495 – that’s more than Php4k of price difference right there (39% difference).

If you’re going for the most budget-friendly device with reliable specs for everyday usage then the Zenfone 5 is the obvious winner, but we’re looking for the device with the most bang for the buck and we believe it’s the Xiaomi Mi 3. This is simply because of its specs that can perform on the same level as other smartphones two or even three times its price. In conclusion, if you’re on a really tight budget the Zenfone 5 is the way to go; but if want to get the most out of your hard-earned cash, then opt for the Xiaomi Mi 3.
