GrabCar’s Assignment Feature guarantees rides for its users

GrabTaxi on its Facebook page announces that all GrabCar drivers are now on Assignment Feature which means a subscriber is guaranteed to an exclusive ride to the nearest available driver.

What this basically does is to somehow push their drivers to accept bookings from passengers as long as they’re available. Failure to maintain a 4/5 acceptance rating is bad news for them and once a driver ignores a request, he will automatically be invisible to other potential passengers on the app. As for how long, we’re not quite sure.

Nevertheless, this is good news for the passengers as they can somehow rest assured that once they book a service from GrabCar, they wouldn’t have to wait long if there’s an available operator nearby.

Uber launches carpooling service UberCOMMUTE in China

Uber, in China, launches a new service called UberCOMMUTE that aims to make commuting easier and more efficient via sharing a ride.

ubercommute

Aiming to help reduce costs for everyone and at the same time cut traffic congestion, the service lets drivers sign in to the app and key in their destination which will then be matched by Uber to participating riders who share the same route. The driver can already see how much he would be earning before he decides to accept the request and pick them up on the way.

Riders will split the payment which could cut the costs in half for each passenger, so that’s a good thing. This also frees up space on the street since people would now be sharing a ride instead of them having one vehicle each.

Currently, only China has the service but the company will “adapt uberCOMMUTE for other cities around the world”. This means there is a high chance that it will make its way here in the Philippines.

Boat and bus hybrid to ferry commuters on Pasig River

MMDA today has conducted a test run for the prototype of MMDA’s River Bus Ferry to be used in transporting commuters along the 25-kilometer Pasig River. If everything goes well we could be seeing about 40 of these hybrids by April 2014.

Though it didn’t work out back in 2011 mainly due to financial losses, the service is being revived this year as part of helping decongest the traffic in Metro Manila due to the major road constructions that are simultaneously going on.

The ferry hybrid was originally a tug boat installed with bus seats that can now accommodate up to 40 people. When this pushes through and becomes operational sometime in April, people would just have to pay a minimal fare to ride the ferry that would be passing through Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, and Pasig City.

Hopefully, the re-implementation of these ferries would help lessen the congestion that we’re experiencing today — more so during rush hour. It was reported that the river’s width has an equivalent of 10 road lanes so if that’s going to be utilized well, coupled by an efficient system, I personally think they’re up to something really good here.

It’s just up to the public if they would ride the ferries as previous complaints include that unpleasant Pasig River smell.
