New MRT Line 3 coaches begin operations today

After announcing early this year that new light rail vehicles (LRV) from China were released for our use to help ease the lives of commuters, today marks the first day of their operations on MRT Line 3.

Today, May 7, 2016, Transportation and Communications Secretary Jun Abaya released photos showing the first trips and passengers of the new MRT Line 3 coaches. These coaches have begun operations starting this morning and, according to Philippine Star, are a part of the 48 coaches ordered from Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. of China under the MRT-3’s capacity expansion project.

With this project, we are expected to receive four new LRVs per month (from March until January 2017) to get the 48 coaches total in order to move 800,000 passengers daily.

Uber expands coverage to the east — Cainta and Antipolo included

Starting today, May 2, 2016, Uber operations will now bring you to the east side of Metro Manila including Cainta and select areas of Taytay, Antipolo, and San Mateo.

It’s important to note that the service only covers going to the aforementioned locations and not from them — so if you live in Cainta, for example, you can only get a ride from Uber going home but not going to Manila.

When you’re headed towards the east, there will be an automatic East Surcharge worth Php60 which is meant “to ensure the economic sustainability of expanding Uber Manila’s coverage area.”

Curious if your place is within the expanded coverage area? You can enter your destination  on the Uber app before hitting the Request button. The app should let you know if the location is outside of Uber’s coverage.

GrabTaxi introduces GrabBike service within Makati and BGC

Apart from sedan and premium vehicles, transport-app GrabTaxi now offers a new service using motorcycle taxis or locally known as habal-habal.

The service is called GrabBike and its roll-out is currently limited within the bustling premises of Makati and BGC. A group of habal-habal drivers swarming at the BGC Bus terminus near Ayala-MRT station are already giving similar service to commuters. With the regulation and convenience of booking, they might just have an edge over 4-wheeled vehicles who can’t get pass-thru heavy traffic.

The base fare for GrabBike is Php 40 for the first 2 kilometers and an additional Php 10/km for the succeeding distance within 2-7 kilometers. A discounted Php 5/km rate is applied if your ride exceeds 8 kilometers.
