CloudFone has a new smartphone for cheap but packs in some pretty neat specs and convincing multimedia-centric design.

The CloudFone Thrill Plus sports a 5.5-inch HD display with front-firing stereo speakers ideal for watching videos on the go or immersive gaming. It’s got a quad-core processor running at 1.3GHz paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. Camera-wise, there’s an 8MP rear autofocus camera with an LED flash and a 5MP wide-angle selfie camera. It’s running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

CloudFone also didn’t skimp on the build quality as they gifted the Thrill Plus with a metal plate for its back cover. Unfortunately, it’s limited to 3G connectivity due to the chipset used.

CloudFone Thrill Plus specs:
5.5-inch IPS LCD display @ 1280 x 720 pixels, 267ppi
1.3GHz MediaTek MT6580 quad-core processor
2GB of RAM
16GB internal storage
Expandable via microSD card
8-megapixel autofocus rear camera w/ LED flash
5-megapixel wide-angle front camera
Dual SIM
3G
Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.0
GPS w/ A-GPS support
Android 6.0 Marshmallow
2500mAh removable battery

The CloudFone Thrill Plus is now on sale for just Php 3,999. Not bad for a device with stereo speakers, HD display, and the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The unit we spotted was on display in CloudFone store at SM Light Mall, Mandaluyong.

Specs Comparison: Cherry Mobile Flare XL Plus vs Cloudfone Excite Prime

Cherry Mobile’s new handset to hit their shelves, the Flare XL Plus, seems to be in familiar place of budget 5.5-inchers. It even reminded us of the CloudFone Excite Prime which was released last January. What’s different and common about the two? Here’s our quick specs comparison.

As you can see from the table above, there’s not much of a difference between. Both have the same CPU, sensors, and software version. What sets them apart is battery capacity. For some good reason, CloudFone Excite Prime offers a larger capacity at 2,820mAh versus the 2300mAh of the Cherry Mobile Flare XL Plus.

Another difference between the two would be the overall design of the phone. ClouFone’s handset is more angular than Cherry Mobile’s, so deciding on that aspect would be a matter of personal preference. Also, the front-facing camera of the Flare XL Plus has more pixel count at 8-megapixels over 5-megapixel of Excite Prime.

Pricing-wise, just like their specifications, both are sold for just Php3,999. If you’re looking for a budget phablet at 5.5-inches, you can choose between these two phones but on paper, the Excite Prime gets the edge with its bigger battery. Either way, you’re not getting LTE connection with the two which is a bit of disappointment for 2016.

Update 04/19: Corrected CloudFone’s front-facing camera to 5-megapixels.

Marshmallow update comes to the CloudPad One

The first local tablet to be gifted with Android 5.0 Lollipop is again getting ahead of the game by having the latest Android flavor.

cloudpad-6.0

Released during the first quarter of 2015, the CloudPad One tablets are now receiving an over-the-air update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It’s an OTA update, so just head to the settings panel to download and install. CloudPad One tablets come in three sizes, 6.95″, 7″, and 8″.

Despite its name, CloudPad One is not part of the Android One program, but it’s nice to see CloudFone doing a pretty good job in keeping the updates coming as promised. If your planning to get your hands on one, you may check out our review of CloudPad One 7.0 here.

CloudFone Thrill HD Hands-on, First Impressions

Android 6.0 Marshmallow devices are a bit rare in the budget segment, except for Android One, as manufacturers give the priority update for the flagship. We don’t expect new Android One devices to come out any time soon, so this CloudFone Thrill HD is worth the attention for those looking for the latest flavor of Android.

cloudfone-thrillhd-1

The CloudFone Thrill HD is a modest smartphone with a quality 5-inch IPS LCD packing a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels @ 294ppi. It is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6580 chipset running at 1.3GHz w/ Mali-400MP as its GPU. Memory is handled by the 1GB RAM and storage capacity is at 8GB. Internal memory may be on the low side of things but you can put a microSD of up to 64GB.

The volume rocker and the power/lock key are both placed on the right side of the device. While the micro-USB port for charging and data connection is on top along with 3.5mm jack.

cloudfone-thrillhd-3

On the back is the 8-megapixel autofocus camera with a single LED flash and the usual CloudFone branding with a loudspeaker placed beneath it. The battery on the device is rated at 2000mAh only, which is small for a handset of this size.

cloudfone-thrillhd-2

The removable backplate of the Thrill HD is somehow similar to the previous Lumia cases wherein it is wrapped around to the sides thus giving the impression of a unibody chassis. Also, the plate is a combination of aluminum and polycarbonate. The cold metal feel add a bit of class to it on hand.

cloudfone-thrillhd-4

It’s a no-frill design like most candybar touchscreen handsets in the market but it doesn’t look cheap as you’d expect for a budget Android. I guess the star here is the Android 6.0 Marshmallow which offers all the latest Android goodness on a budget.

Performance is relatively smooth when navigating through the UI but since the RAM is just 1GB, multitasking is not the Thrill HD’s forte. Everyday usage should be fine and for a handset of this range, we normally don’t expect much from it aside from handling basic tasks.

CloudFone Thrill HD specifications:

1.3GHz MediaTek MT6580 quad-core chipset

8GB internal storage

2-megapixel front camera
Dual SIM / Dual Standby
3G HSPA+
Wi-Fi 802 b/g/n
Bluetooth
FM Radio
2000mAh battery
Android 6.0 Marshmallow

The CloudFone Thrill HD is on sale for Php2,999 and it comes with a free protective cover and Spotify-branded earphones. There’s also a cheaper variant dubbed as the Thrill Lite, still with Android 6.0 but priced at Php1,999.
