Cherry Mobile Touch XL 2 with VR Glass hands-on, first impressions

Cherry Mobile has announced a new smartphone with a 6-inch display, quad-core CPU, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow – the Cherry Mobile Touch XL 2. It is priced at just Php3,499 and comes with a free VR cardboard headset. Check out our first impressions below.

With its 6-inch display, the Touch XL 2 can be immediately considered a phablet just like the Flare XL 2.0. The display, which has an HD resolution has a pixel density of 244ppi – decent for its size but won’t impress.

Above the display, we have the earpiece, light sensor, and the 2MP camera. Down below are three unlit capacitive buttons for navigation.

The left side is devoid of any buttons, but on the right, we have the volume keys and power/lock button.

Up top are the microUSB port and headset jack, while down at the bottom are the loudspeaker and microphone.

Flip it on its back and you will see the 8MP main shooter and the LED flash.

The backplate is removable which gives you access to its 3,000mAh (removable) battery, two SIM card slots, and dedicated microSD card.

When it comes to design and build, the Touch XL 2 reminds us of the Infinix Note 2 which we did a hands-on recently. Both smartphones look and feel the some with some minor differences. It has a plastic build with slightly rounded sides while the rear part sports a brushed metal finish. It doesn’t look bad actually but it doesn’t feel inspiring either.

On the hand, it feels solid, a bit hefty, and can still be easily grasped with one hand. Although navigation will force you to use both hands. Software-wise, it is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow which is good. However, the MediaTek quad-core CPU is only partnered with a 1GB RAM.

As for the VR Glasses, it’s made of cardboard and already assembled. All you need to do is put in the straps and secure the smartphone inside the headset.
