A recent presentation by the DOST-ICTO on the National Broadband Plan and the ASEAN ICT Masterplan showed that there are over 7.1 million fixed broadband subscribers in the Philippines.
Of the 7.1 million, only 10% have speeds of over 4Mbps. That means 9 out of 10 internet users in the Philippines are below the 4Mbps mark, which is why a significant majority have been complaining of slow internet in the country.
What is interesting though is that 0.6% of the total subscribers are actually enjoying 10Mbps of faster. That’s around 42,600 broadband subscribers out of the 7.1 million who are satisfied. Another 0.2% of them total subscribers have 15Mbps or faster connection at home or just 14,200 households enjoying really good speeds (could already be fiber).
The latest report from Akamai (for Q1 2015) also noted that the national average of internet speed in the Philippines is still at 2.8Mbps, way below the regional average but still higher than India and Indonesia.
The 2.8Mbps average is 35% higher than the average from the same quarter in 2014.
Akamai also measured the peak average speeds at 20.3Mbps
Akamai generates this report based on access speeds recorded by their CDN servers from all internet users in the Philippines that access content from their network. Ookla, on the other hand, uses collected speed tests from selected users accessing their website on www.speedtest.net.
