Hands On: Doss Asimom 3 Portable Bluetooth Speaker

We’ve been checking out quite a number of Bluetooth-enabled audio devices lately, and here comes another. The Doss Asimom 3, a “talking” wireless portable Bluetooth speaker.

The Doss Asimom 3 is a can-like speaker that features Bluetooth and NFC (Near Field Communication) for wireless connectivity. It’s quite hefty due to its incredible build quality. It’s made out of metal with a combination of polycarbonate. The top features the usual controls like Play/Pause, Next & Previous and an answer key. The middle ring that lights up when powered is also the volume control enabled by touch, same as the others.

NFC one-touch pairing is present, so using this with an NFC-enabled device will only require a single tap.

What is nice about the Asimom 3 is in its features, like wireless charging and voice-prompt. It comes with a base charging plate that also acts as a powerbank with a capacity of 1020mAh. Just place the speaker on top of the plate and voila. A micro-USB to USB (female port) is included out of the box but the micro-USB cable doesn’t seemed to be properly crafted because it just won’t fit in, or maybe it’s a unit specific issue. The voice-prompt is nifty and surprisingly entertaining. Instead of relying on light indicators, the Asimom 3 will speak out its current status.

The battery built in to the speaker itself is rated up to 8 hours of usage. As to save battery life or at times when Bluetooth doesn’t seem to cooperate, a 3.5mm cable is included out of the box for wired connection. Maximum distance of the speaker from its host is up to 10 meters, so keep it near for uninterrupted playback.

It offers 360-degrees of sound thanks to its cylindrical design. While this may sound fantastic, the audio quality of the portable speaker is something left to be desired. The volume is loud and the bass is really there but the overall output doesn’t feel as whole as compared to others.

If you want a portable speaker that is nicely built and did I mention “talking”, then this is just the right thing for you. The Doss Asimom 3 is available at Widget City. (See posting here)

Samsung Bluetooth Speaker BS300 Hands-On

A few people would want powerful Bluetooth speakers, but most speakers out there are massive in size, making it not ideal for users who are on the go. Enter Samsung’s BS300, which is a pocket-friendly bluetooth device. We go hands-on, so read on to find out what we think about it.

BS300

Getting started

When we first saw the casing, we thought that it was gonna be a huge gadget. Turns out it was something that could easily fit in your pocket. But enough with the rhyming, and get to the the unboxing.

We had a hard time getting started with the BS300, from taking it off the casing to pairing it with a device through Bluetooth, so we figured we’d make a short video since we almost broke the transparent packaging at first.

After reading the manual, you’re pretty much good to go because if you didn’t read it, you’re going to have a hard time. The manual’s very short and it only looks long because it ranges in many languages. After that, pairing and all – operation is a breeze.

Controls

CONSTRUCTION

On top are the controls – volume, power, playback and DNSe (Digital Natural Sound engine), which is Samsung’s take on surround sound. On the back are labels, while on the sides you’ll find the port for charging, line-in and a place to put accessories. Up front are air holes, the speakers, the mic & the button for taking calls.

Sound Quality & Microphone

In practice, the sound is significantly louder than your smartphone or your tablet. It can’t match larger sized speakers, but it’s enough to fill a small room with decent volume. Quality on the other hand is subpar; it doesn’t deliver clear bass tones, and trebles create quite a hiss. It’s in the mids where the BS300 succeeds for the most part, and it does get the job done with audio that involves voice – podcasts, vocal-rich songs and the like.

Samsung BS

The microphone reminds us of other Samsung devices, especially since we have a few Galaxy phones still with us. It captures clear audio for the most part, but it isn’t as sharp and as accurate as you’d expect. We used the microphone in recording the voice-over on our unboxing video, so check that out.

Battery & Conclusion

We kept the BS300 playing songs over Bluetooth on maximum volume. From a full charge, the blue LED light (good battery) didn’t even turn red (low battery) for two hours. However, at that time frame, there was an obvious degrade in quality already.

Samsung’s rated 4 hour use may come very accurate on this one, although like we’ve said, quality turns bad halfway. Expect slightly better battery life when using a wired connection.

SBS300

It’s a little hard to look at especially because of its size and its limitations in power, but if you take a minute to consider it, it’ll get you thinking. If you need great speakers that fit in your pocket, the Samsung BS300 is exactly that. Widget City has it selling it for a price of Php1,500 (see listing here).

Samsung YA-BS300 specs:
Bluetooth 2.0
46 x 94 x 13 mm (dimensions)
62.2 g (weight)
560mAh battery

Samsung unveils DA-F60, NFC and aptX in tow

Samsung has recently unveiled their first ever portable Bluetooth speaker – the DA-F60. Although it seems like your average wireless speaker, this baby has pair of features that sets it apart from the pack.

The DA-F60 is equipped with an NFC chip which, if enabled, can easily pair a supported smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth by just simply tapping it to the speaker. This is a great feature, especially because there’s not a whole lot you can do with that oft-forgotten feature of your tablet/smartphone.

Samsung DA-F60

In addition to its NFC Pairing feature, this Bluetooth speaker is also imbued with a fancy audio codec called aptX. What this codec does is it enhances the sound quality of the speaker to a level that’s comparable to that of a CD or a full-wired audio quality. This is achieved with the help of a proprietary audio technology which boosts the dynamic range of the sound and also improves the wireless streaming between the two devices.

The Samsung DA-F60 is slated to hit the shelves in the first half of this year, but there are still no talks about its pricing as of the time of writing. We guess it safe to say that it’ll have a much cheaper price tag than the DA-E750 which retailed for an eye-watering USD700 when it first made its debut last year.
