BlackBerry’s Android slider phone shown off in a leak

Popular leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) on Twitter posted an update about the awaited BlackBerry Venice that’s reported to run on an Android software.

Blass, on his tweet, attached some new renderings of the hybrid phone that flaunts its physique — showing off the sliding mechanism in addition to the sides, keyboard, and the optics the handset is going to be using. Previous rumors point to a 5.4-inch display with 2560 x 1440 resolution, a Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, and of course Android’s operating system.

The leakster also mentions that the BlackBerry Venice is confirmed for a November release on all four national US carriers.

Although still not official, Evan Blass has had a record of calling out the specs and details of a device even before they are released. This means there’s a great chance that what you’re seeing here is the real thing. What are your thoughts on the purported BlackBerry Venice? Will this be the saving grace of the company to get back up on its feet?

BlackBerry to use Android OS for a future smartphone?

Reports from sources familiar with the matter suggest that BlackBerry might be giving in and using Google‘s Android operating system for an upcoming smartphone.

Could we be seeing a BlackBerry smartphone that runs on Android? (Image: Pocketnow)

A number of sources back this claim and said that, “the move to use Android is part of BlackBerry’s strategy to pivot to focus on software and device management,” Reuters reports.

However, BlackBerry isn’t acknowledging any of these.

“We don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched,” said the company in an email.

In addition, sources mentioned that BlackBerry will probably use an Android OS in its slider phone that will combine touchscreen and a physical keyboard — the one that the company showed off for a little while at MWC last March.

It is still unclear whether there is any truth to this so we’ll just have to wait and see. But if ever it pushes through, do you think a BlackBerry smartphone running on Android with dual input methods is the secret weapon that the company needs to put its name out there again?

Cherry Mobile to buy BlackBerry, forms Cherry Berry brand

Cosmic Technologies, owner of the Cherry Mobile brand in the Philippines, has announced that it is buying into dying handset manufacturer BlackBerry for an estimated $780 Million (or Php33.75 billion).

The planned acquisition is a move for Cherry Mobile to go into the global market after becoming the No 1. smartphone vendor in the Philippines for a couple of years (see IDC Report: Cherry Mobile Named #1 Vendor as PH Becomes 3rd Largest Smartphone Market in SEA).

With a 21.9% market share in smartphones in the Philippines, it is estimated that Cherry Mobile shipped close to 8.8 million smartphones in 2014 (rival MyPhone, which is ranked #3 shipped an estimated 4.5 million the same year).

Cosmic Technologies will retain the BlackBerry label in the United States and Europe but hopes to also re-brand itself here in the Philippines. From Cherry Mobile, it will soon operate under the brand “Cherry Berry” which, according to the company, represents mobile devices that are not only affordable but also feature top notch security that BlackBerry is known for.

Acquisition is still ongoing but is expected to finish by late 2015 or early 2016. The first Cherry Berry devices are expected to be introduced by then.
