Wearable display technology has been getting a lot of attentions lately. However, instead of just riding the waves, Avegant has taken the Virtual/Augmented Reality fad to the next level with their device dubbed as the Glyph.
Just recently, we had the liberty of taking an Oculus Rift prototype for a spin. But as cool as it may seem, we find the Rift too bulky for comfort; a complete opposite of Avegant’s Glyph that can pass for a high-end headphones.
That’s because the Glyph is indeed a headphone with a pair of 40mm drivers on each side with a dynamic range of 20Hz – 20KHz. Of course, that’s just the whip-cream and cherry on top, the real treat lies underneath the Glyph’s headband.
Instead of an obtrusive LCD/LED panel smacked in front of your face, Avegant utilized a technology coined Virtual Retina Display, which projects images straight to your eyeballs through a set of “low-power, low-light LED light”. It creates an illusion that your 8-feet away from an 80-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.
According to Avegant, their brainchild will make its debut on CES 2014 and they’ll take it to Kickstarter to gather more funding in preparation for mass production. Minimum pledge for the Glyph is said to start at USD500.
