Cider makes iOS apps run on Android devices

Ever wanted to try out apps that are iOS exclusive? With Project Cider, it’s not that far off. There’s a possibility of seeing a future where app exclusivity no longer exists. More about it after the jump.

Cider is developed and designed by the Department of Computer Science at Columbia University and is basically “an operating system compatibility architecture that can run applications built for different mobile ecosystems, iOS or Android, together on the same smartphone or tablet.” It means that running Android apps on an iOS device is also possible. The goal of Cider is to tear down the walls of exclusivity with different apps and let everyone have access to them, regardless of what operating system they’re running.

Watch the demo below to see a Google Nexus 7 run apps from the two long-competing companies like they’re close partners now.

Making use of the apps’ entire functions, however, might be where it gets complicated since one of the reasons why some are exclusive is because of their patented hardware or unique software features. In short, a lot of legalities will be involved but it’s still feasible.

Although that may be the case, we’re convinced that the point of this project is to simply show that programs could work and are possible to function even across platforms. It leads us to the question: If you were to be granted to have an app that’s exclusive to a different OS, what are the top softwares would you want to try?

This app lets you chat without Internet or mobile signal

Yes, you read that right. FireChat is a new app that lets users chat and share photos even without an Internet connection by using an iOS feature called Multipeer Connectivity Framework.

firechat

This Multipeer Connectivity Framework works the same way as Apple’s AirDrop that uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to send data from one device to another even though one of the devices isn’t connected to the Internet. Basically, as long as one device is connected, it can share its connection to other devices within its range. The receiver can then pass the previous connection unto another device within its own range, and so on – making communication possible between two devices without Internet or mobile signal.

This service could be used during concerts, outdoor events, or calamities when affected areas don’t have signals. A good example would be last year’s typhoon Yolanda that destroyed the cell sites in Tacloban, making rescue operations tougher. An app like FireChat could’ve entered the scene and provided communication between volunteers using their smartphones.

FireChat is one of the first to use this feature from Apple and requires iOS 7 to function since the MCF technology is unavailable until then. FireChat has a limit of 30 feet meaning users could only be 30 feet apart from each other in order to not break the meshed network.

We’re excited to see what this unappreciated new feature of Apple can do when it gets fully developed — maybe a wider range and stronger connection? As of now, it is exclusive to iOS users (sorry Androids) and is ready to be downloaded at the App store.

New Angry Birds Epic now a Final Fantasy-like RPG

Tired of playing the same old Bird games? Rovio has just announced that its next installment of the Angry Bird franchise will involve RPG gameplay with customizable armors and weapons — the Angry Bird Epic.

angry birds

Angry Bird Epic, as reported by Kotaku, is an adventure game that veers away from the old physics-based gameplay and introduces a new turn-based battle between the same birds and pigs that fans have been familiar with. How? Just imagine the popular Final Fantasy games where you take turns, choose your move, and attack your opponents.

It features a story (most probably continuing where they left off) and a new crafting system so players can modify their weapons, armors, and potions from in-game purchases using accumulated points or real-life currency.

Angry Birds Epic will have a soft launch later this week in iTunes store for Canada and Australia, and will later on be available globally for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 8.

Will this be the new Bird game that will once again eat hours of our time?

Sony Socialife App now available for non-Xperia devices

The Sony Socialife is just one of the many exclusive pre-installed apps that most Xperia users have been enjoying since day one. Lucky for other Android users though, Sony has recently made their app available for other Android users who are not using an Xperia device.

For those who are unaware, Socialife is Sony’s proprietary app that works similarly to Google Play Newsstand and Flipboard. It allows user to check their Facebook feeds and get their daily dose of news from top websites like Huffington Post, Business Insider, etcetera.

Moreover, Socialife also has sync feature which allows user to pick up where they left off on their other device. And since the app is also available for Windows platform, the contents that they’ve saved on their mobile device can later be viewed on their PC.

The best part about the Sony Socialife is that it’s free of charge and you can download yours now by heading over to this link. Do note though that the app is only compatible with Android devices running on Jelly bean (version 4.1) and up.
