More insights on iOS 7’s new features

With WWDC 2013 just around the corner, more and more information/speculations are starting to emerge about the iOS7’s new features. Apart from “flat design” scheme that we’ve shared to you guys a month back, 9to5mac has uncovered a handful of new features that we could probably expect from the upcoming build of Apple’s mobile platform.

It’s been said that the iOS7 will feature a redesigned interface which allows for better multitasking and lesser device interaction in accessing commonly viewed information such as weather, feeds and the like. Moreover, Innsbruck (iOS7’s codename) is believed to sport a software-based polarizing filter which makes it a bit challenging for shoulder-surfers to see what you’re doing with your device.

From what we know so far, it seems that Apple is trying its best to still keep things competitive between its archrival Android. But amidst all of this, we’re wondering if the rabbit that Apple’s planning to pull from its hat is going to be enough to regain their place at the top of the OS war?

Apple iPhone prototype pictured, is it the next iPhone 5s?

While everyone is sliding towards the reports that iOS 7 will feature a redesign, here comes an alleged photo of the next iPhone’s hardware – and it looks interesting as it employs the iPhone 5‘s look with a totally different implementation. Apple iPhone 5S anyone?

5S

GSMarena received images of what seems to be a prototype of Apple (note that the source couldn’t even swear to its authenticity), but what makes it believable up to a certain extent is that Apple had a similar patent approved last week. The screen on the image isn’t visible, and gone is the signature home-button. The site states that the design isn’t typical of Apple as it favors squarish & compact designs.

patent

The angle we can take this on is that Jony Ive is now working on both hardware and software teams of Apple, and this could be a move to match both and make it compliment each other designwise. If iOS 7 really is facing a redesign, then the loss of a home button can be justified.

It also could be just a prototype which won’t be seeing the light of day anytime soon. Or, just a very good render as we so no flaws in the image itself. We prepared a render for you down below.

iOS 7 might feature a more flat redesign

If you may have not known yet, Jony Ive – the person behind Apple industrial design – is now also making arrangements with the company’s software design. According to developers, he is trying to push a more “flat design” for the next iOS that aims to be simpler and starker.

Apple’s iOS has pretty much been the same since 2007; it’s a row of icons of apps, and throughout the years, there was an addition of wallpapers, a notification bar, a task-switcher, a voice assistant and a number of features. While those have been truly useful upgrades, there hasn’t been really much change in the whole design of iOS.

Some can argue it’s hard to change the whole theme of iOS as it greatly compliments other Apple software such as Mac OS X, but if you wanna take the business perspective, a little change can do great for the product as iOS has been quite stale. The report indicates any change will be conservative, so we don’t think it will really be that massive of a change.

Apple outs iOS 6.1.3, aims to fix security flaws

After a brief period of beta testing, iOS 6.1.3 is now out in the open and ready to be downloaded on supported iOS-powered devices running on iOS 6 or later.

The recent update aims to patch up the platform’s well-documented vulnerability that allows anyone that has access to your device to totally bypass the lock screen to access information using the phone application.

Apart from fixing the bug, iOS 6.1.3 also brings some improvements on Apple Maps in Japan. The update is also said to remove the EvasiOn jailbreak on the device and impairing any possibility for it to be jailbroken again using existing means. It’s something to ponder upon before you update your device.

Apple iOS: The Best and Worst of

Mobile operating systems is probably one of the most sensitive topics in the industry. Insult one platform and you start a flame war. But, let’s move on, shall we? Go back to basics. In its current state, what does iOS have to offer? What does it lack? Read on and join in the discussion.

No one will ever forget that moment: Steve Jobs occupied the stage and introduced the first iPhone in 2007. iOS was really meant to be easy-to-use and smart at the same time. Apple succeeded with this and they immediately rose through the charts. It expanded through the iPod Touch, the iPad and the iPad Mini.

But in a much smarter world, will the same OS conquer? Put the original iPhone OS beside iOS 6 and you’ll barely see any difference. Is that a good thing?

The Best of iOS

1. Simplicity – Take an iPhone in your hands, power it on and play with it for minutes and we bet you’ll know how to use it instantly. The use of a single home button and the elegance of the icons are enough for almost everybody. Not everyone enjoys exploring their devices, and with iOS, you don’t need to.

2. “There’s an app for that.” –  iOS is an app-centered platform. It’s basically a grid of apps. Titles usually come to iOS first (Temple Run, Instagram etc.) and not only that it gets them first, but they also get the best ones. Even games like Infinity Blade won’t see the light of day in Android or any competing platform.

3. Straightforward – Apple hides everything you don’t need to see. It feels like you’re dictated upon and it’s a good thing for the average user. It doesn’t confuse people, it doesn’t show you options you don’t understand and above all, it’s all done for you.

4. It was a pioneer – Being first in the business is a good thing, and this is why Apple has a great share of the market today. No matter how tempting it is for users to shift platforms, it’s difficult and it’s all due to the money and time they’ve invested in iOS. It’s more than just an operating system; it’s an ecosystem.

The Worst Of iOS

1. Slow evolution – Take a look at iOS in 2007 and take a look at it now. What’s changed? iOS 6 has 200 new features, but who can name them? Windows Phone, Android and even BlackBerry 10 is evolving faster than iOS within the past few years. Sure, it nailed some features like Siri, but how about updates like Apple Maps? We could use some changes.

2. Lawsuits – Not really a side of iOS that people hate on, but a side of Apple itself. Most consumers won’t know about this, but the internet goes off on this topic like crazy. Apple sues mostly on the iOS front; you don’t see them suing for Macs and iPods. Their obvious love for monopolizing the market isn’t a thing to like, and the less competition they have, the less innovative they will be. So, here’s to hoping they’ll stop.

3. Price – For a device running a simple OS, it’s quite expensive. We understand that Apple is a very valuable company and that the law of supply & demand is applicable here as well. The demand and supply should meet halfway, and that is called the equilibrium price. We won’t see any cheaper iOS devices yet, because until someone wants an iOS device, the price will remain high. So we guess that’s where the sad part lies; only a few can purchase a device running iOS.

Apple’s iOS was there from the start, and it’s trying to maintain its position as one of the best mobile operating systems out there. Will we ever see a massive rethinking of iOS? Will we see cheaper iPhones? Under new management, we can’t really tell. What about you, what were your best and worst experiences with iOS? Where do you see it in the next 5 years? Please share and leave a comment down below.
