BioUnlock; unlocks your Mac using iPhone 5S’ Touch ID

Late last week, app developer Eric Castro teased his upcoming project called BioUnlock which can be used to unlock a Mac through the iPhone 5S’ Touch ID.

Touch ID

The BioUnlock works by connecting the handset and Mac on the same Wi-Fi network. Users will then have to register a separate fingerprint for the Mac, on top of the one assigned to unlock the iPhone.

Here’s a quick video of BioUnlock in action:

According to Eric, he’s planning to include Bluetooth support on the BioUnlock’s arsenal, as well as support for Windows platform.

Mr. Castro claims that his nifty tweak should be available by the end of this month and may cost “a dollar or two”.

YugaTech’s Top 5 Smartphones of 2013

For the past year, we had a great time of smartphone launches, demos, reviews & more. Before we enter 2014, the YugaTech team voted upon ourselves our very own top 5 smartphones for 2013 & we combined them with our readers’ very own best smartphones poll earlier this year. So without further ado, here are the top 5 smartphones for the year.

iphone5s-review

5. Apple iPhone 5S – five for five, Apple takes the award for refreshing last year’s iPhone 5 by adding an A7 CPU, a gold color option, dual tone LED flash, slow motion video, Touch ID & more. It ranked #4 in our readers’ choice poll and it would have ranked differently here too if only we didn’t favor better phones in this list.

4. Sony Xperia Z1 - up on number four, the waterproof Xperia Z1 tops with its premium build quality matched with high-end internals. The Snapdragon CPU will never cease to impress, plus Sony’s own camera is really one to marvel at. Apart from the display, there’s no reason why we can’t include the Z1 in our top smartphone list. After all, it ranked #3 in our reader poll.

2.5. DRAW: LG G2 & HTC One

Looks like we have a draw guys. Happening backstage, the HTC One was supposed to be our own choice for the top smartphone, but it didn’t rank so high on our readers’ choice poll. On the other hand, the LG G2 was supposed to be our readers’ top smartphone, but we preferred much more handsets than it. All of that made it result in a draw.

The HTC One is fast, sleek & is just drop dead gorgeous in all ways – the display is breathtaking, the BoomSound speakers are the best in the industry, the camera works well & Sense packs a very good UI paired with fast internals.

The LG G2 on the other hand is basically a champion all around the spec sheet, from the display & the camera to sheer performance. The buttons on the back may take some time to get used to, but nonetheless it offers that certain element of uniqueness to the device.

And our best smartphone of 2013 is…

It won’t come as a surprise to most people, but our best smartphone of 2013 is none other than the Galaxy Note 3! The device packs an amazing set of internals and is for the most part a no compromise phone from the 1080p display, the large battery, the camera that’s capable of 4K video to the 3GB RAM. Not to mention, stylus functionality works very well.

That’s it for our top smartphones this 2013. If you wanted to know, somewhere out there, the Lumia 1020, the Nexus 5 & the Galaxy S4 hanged before reaching the top 5. We can only wonder how different things will be next year; it’s a long wait for sure – but stay tuned for more to come this upcoming 2014!

Conspiracy Theory: Technology’s Dark Role in the Future

Technology is a way of doing things, and doing things are either good, evil or indifferent. It isn’t always about getting faster computers, more powerful gaming hardware or more efficient car engines – it’s about what you do with them. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.

Our ways of doing things have totally changed through time. Now, we get news fast, instant messaging & powerful mobile gadgets from cameras to laptop computers. Most of us even have probably experienced the rise and fall of compact disks. It’s all moving so fast that I think even parents have a hard time coping up with their kids & trends. The line of what’s right & wrong is starting to get blurry.

DARK TECHNOLOGY

But I’m not here to lecture anyone about morality. I’m here to talk about how powerful influences could easily change our future for the worse using technology. Aside from possible nuclear warfare & a far-fetched zombie apocalypse, I’m looking at the government’s way of handling us – the citizens.

Governments are taking advantage of technology to further their own interests – one great example of this is the U.S. Government. If you haven’t heard of PRISM, well where have you been for the past months? You should go catch up here.

In a nutshell, the surveillance project, PRISM, basically means that the National Security Agency of the U.S. can see through everything you have on the internet – even the ones you have passwords on as they have access to Facebook, Yahoo, Google & other internet giants. If you’re not yet as worried, then knowing that they spied on other foreign leaders should make you think again. With that said, it made me much more skeptical about the always listening & always watching Xbox One & the always listening Moto X - both of which are from American companies.

TATTOO SMARTPHONE

Google applied for a patent of a microphone tattooed to your throat

I’m not saying that they’re spying on us right now using the said tech, but I do have to mention that the NSA has been spying on lots of people for decades. What’s worse is that issues like these are unregulated without checks & balances. Once these technologies have been embedded into our culture & lifestyle, it will be very hard to pull out. Aside from that, we’re just making a lazier generation. In the end, activists could become slacktivists.

In addition to these always watching & always listening technologies that the government might be using, there’s also the sudden shift to cloud solutions. Companies want you to pay them to let you store your data in their servers for accessibility. Also, online transactions are also starting to gain traction through NFC, mobile wallets & Bitcoin. There’s a huge possibility that we might all become dependent on these services & “conveniences” in the future.

Now, there are always two sides to a story. Technology isn’t all bad, and isn’t all good either. In addition to those two sides, I’m pretty sure people will be divided on the issues of privacy & an all-seeing government – so I’ll leave a quote here below:

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin

In the future, we’re just going to have to try and change for the better. Be more aware & get engaged. Let’s not get very spoiled with new tech every now and then. Consumerism is consuming all of us, and with each day passing under abusive governments & corporations, the whole system just keeps getting less sustainable.

‘You know how movies usually portray an evil well-controlled highly-advanced totalitarian state? Well, that’s how these companies’ new innovations have made me feel like visualizing for the past few days. I hope that wasn’t a foresight; I hope it’s just paranoia.

Apple iPad 5 & iPad Mini 2 coming October 22

Mark your calendars! As Nokia will be holding a big event on the 22nd and Microsoft will be outing their new Surface tablets, Apple is reported to be announcing the 5th-generation iPad & the new iPad Mini on the same day along with the Mac Pro & OS X Mavericks sharing the spotlight.

Apple iPad 5

While we’re expecting a Retina Display for the 2nd iPad Mini, the 5th-gen iPad will be the bigger story. It’s rumored to be packing Apple’s 64-bit A7 CPU, the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, a better camera and a new design following the iPad Mini – thinner bezels.

It looks like Apple will be stealing quite some thunder from Nokia & Microsoft, as even the Finnish company is rumored to be planning to release their first tablet ever – the Lumia 2520.
