Apple announces OS X 10.10 Yosemite

At WWDC 2014, Apple finally unveils their latest operating system – OS X 10.10 Yosemite, long rumored to be an update to its predecessor bridging the design gap between Apple’s desktop OS and mobile OS, iOS, along with a bunch of app improvements.

OS X Yosemite

The update brings design changes to elements such as the dock, the toolbars, the icons and a lot more. The Gaussian blurs are also found everywhere along with light blue accents, similar with iOS 7. Apps such as messaging also get redesigned with the aforementioned design language, and a lot of new features seem to come straight from, if not inspired by, iOS itself.

Apple will also be including iCloud Drive which will sync cloud storage across your devices. To add, they’ve added a feature to Mail called MailDrop for sending large files. A lot of apps have aesthetically changed for the most part; Safari being one, updated to look simpler.

Aside from the syncing of messages and files, Apple will also be including Handoff – a continuity client that will allow users to finish off what they’ve started in one platform to another in real-time. To top it all off, you can also now answer phone calls from your Mac.

OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be available to developers today and will be available for public beta soon. After which, Yosemite will be available for free just like Mavericks.

Lumia Image Quality lead is moving to Apple

Fresh from the Microsoft acquisition, a former Nokia employee is now being absorbed by a rival company. He’s not just a mere employee but the a lead of the Lumia Photography division.

Ari Partinen, who has announced that he is now moving to Apple, joined Nokia back in 2007 and is currently listed in LinkedIn as “Lumia Photography Lead at Nokia” with “comprehensive knowledge about Image Quality testing and tuning on ISP level from very successful Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia N8 projects.”

No specific details was posted about his new position at the Cupertino-based company but of course we will be expecting great things from him, same as we did with the PureView technology.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is just around the corner so Partinen’s contribution might come late into the game. We’ll just have to see what he has in store for us starting next year.

Apple might acquire Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion

Beats Audio, makers of premium headphones (premium prices too), might soon be a part of your iPhone, iPod, and iPad.

Rumor has it that Apple is considering to buy Beats Electronics, makers of the popular Beats Audio products, for $3.2 billion. Beats was recently valued at more than $1 billion, and even with Apple’s large cash pile of around $159 billion, this will pose as the company’s biggest acquisition yet if it pushes through.

This is not the first time that Beats Audio was incorporated with mobile devices. HTC owns 50.1% majority share of Beats and had their previous flagship smartphones come with special Beats Audio branding, earphones, and software. However, due to high cost and low revenue, HTC stopped offering premium earphones and eventually divested their holdings from Beats last year.

Beats Audio also recently launched their own music streaming service that competes with the likes of Apple’s iTunes Radio and the more popular Spotify.
