Android 5.1 OTA update rolls out to Google Nexus 5

More or less a month ago, Google released an update to Android Lollipop that came along with the releases of Android One devices, named Android 5.1. Today, I just received an OTA (over-the-air) update on my Google Nexus 5, prompting me to update.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Nexus 5

New features should include:

  • Support for multiple SIM cards – the new update now lets you use more than one SIM card on a device with multiple SIM slots.
  • Device Protection – your lost or stolen device will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account – even if someone resets your device to factory settings. According to the page it will be available on most Android devices that run Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.
  • High-definition voice calling – as the name suggests, voice calls should be clearer when two phones running Android 5.1 call each other.

update

So far, I can test none of these features since I don’t know people who run Android 5.1 nor does any Nexus 5 support multiple SIM cards. However, one of the biggest changes I’ve noticed was the improved quick settings – I can now look for WiFi connections and Bluetooth devices through the notification bar without going through the settings app.

Expect the update to reach your Nexus devices very soon, but if you can’t wait, you may flash the factory images that are already available, but you’ll have to backup your data first.

Some of the niceties to expect when the update hits your devices are as follows:

  • Fresh, streamlined looks – based on Google’s material design, but retaining our minimalistic approach to interface and application design
  • New look notifications and lock screen – with fully customizable settings, so you only get the information you really need
  • Multi user profiles and guest mode – making it easy for family and friends to use your device, or the creation of dual environments for work and play…
  • Android for Work – not only are business-ready Xperia smartphones and tablets unique devices for work – with waterproof form factors, great battery life and productivity features – they will now also be part of the Android for Work ecosystem
  • Better storage control and customisation – with the option to easily move applications from internal memory to SD card – giving you more control over your content, particularly useful for devices with slightly less space

The update will first arrive on the northern parts of Europe, with other countries following suit. Also keep in mind that timing and availability may vary by market and/or carrier.

iOS 8 reportedly suffers more app crashes than Android Lollipop

Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop suffers less app crashes than rival mobile operating system software iOS 8 from Apple, according to data from mobile application management specialist company Crittercism.

According to the data reported by ZDNet, the app crashes on Google’s latest mobile operating system beat that of its rival by a mere 0.2%.

The report also noted that Google has thoroughly worked through all of the bugs present on its device and have significantly improved their app crash rate since 4.4 KitKat with a 0.6% decline. It’s also worth noting that any major version of Android Jellybean were significantly missing in this comparison.

On the other hand, iOS 8’s performance as shown was bound to be more buggy as it had gained a 0.3 percent increase in app crash rate against its predecessor, the iOS 7. This is a surprise, since Apple is very strict with the apps they approve to be displayed on their app store.

Take note that apps do have a lot of reasons why they crash. There’s a little chance that you can encounter them but in dire circumstances when your phone suffers from any hardware or software issue, it’s very likely that you would.
