How would you like an Android 5.0 Lemon Cake?

Before Google released its new OS in the past, they usually drop hints here and there as to what the next name and version would be. Well during yesterday’s I/O event while Google was giving a preview of what the new look for the Android “L” would be like, they showed off the “anatomy of a notification”. Along with it comes a sample message that talks about specifically bringing home a lemon cake. Could this be a clue to the new Android name?

As the sample Google used shows, some guy named Daniel is bringing home his homemade lemon cake. Lemon Cake. So it starts with an “L”, is also a sweet dessert, and has the right ring to it and could work as the new OS name. The folks over at Android Guys could be on to something here, but they can also just be looking into it too much.

Where would you place your bets, though? So far there’s also Lollipop and Lasagna in our possible list of the next Android update. Can you guys think of other possible names for it?

Expect a new look from Android across platforms

Earlier today, Google has shown the public of what the new Android “L” will look like when it is officially released. With it, the company announced a new universal design language called Material Design that aims to give a consistent, unified look across platforms.

The new look will be running on a developer tool called Polymer which will make the design tools for mobile available for web as well. The plan is to see this design whether you’re on your smartphone, tablet, computer, smarwatch, or TV — similar to how Apple does it with their design patterns. It will have new and different animation capabilities, built-in real time UI shadows, and “hero” elements that can be passed from screen to screen.

In addition, the elements should remind its users of “print-based design typography with deliberate color choices, edge-to-edge imagery, large-scale typography, and intentional white space to create a bold and graphic interface that immerses the user in the experience.”

It was reported that this is a way for Google to prove that they can keep up with Apple in terms of design. What do you think of the new layout? Is it a refreshing look for Android or it seems to remind you of Microsoft’s Metro UI?

Android L: major redesign, better performance in tow

Over at Google IO 2014, the company has just teased the next version of their mobile operating system - Android L - and while we’re not yet hearing the ‘sweet’ name nor the version number, we are introduced to a major redesign and a performance boost in graphics coding, battery life and a lot more.

Android Lollipop

Google has talked a lot about the design in their keynote, describing the depths of the shadows and how Material Design can make it a lot more convenient for the user experience. The design will be incorporated across several platforms, making it uniform for Google’s new design language. We’ve seen new quick settings, a new keyboard and a lot more in this Android version – and the new runtime is also going to be ART for performance boosts. Project Volta, Google claims, will also aim to better battery life.

Developers will be working with Google on it soon, and we’re expecting the company to launch it with the official name and version number once it’s fully ready in its next event. As for now, we have a glimpse of what’s coming next for the little green robot.
