Nexus 9 by HTC is coming very soon!

The upcoming Nexus 9 tablet is just around the corner as multiple sources confirm the device’s existence. Taiwan’s National Communications Commission and Twitter leaker @upleaks give us a preview.

As seen from the image above, the Nexus 9 sports a matte back finish just like its 2013 Nexus cousins. The over-all design resembles a blown-up Nexus 5 or a Nexus 7 (2013). Also, there’s single LED flash beneath the camera module.

While we should take the purported leak with a grain of salt, the screenshot from Taiwan’s NCC might be the real deal. Though, there are no specifications included. At least we can say that the awaited successor to Google’s popular and fantastic Nexus tablets will be made by HTC.

New iPad and Nexus devices? What we expect to launch this October

September’s got a lot of surprises tucked under its sleeve. We’ve kicked off October (in local time) with the Windows 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launch announcements. What more can we expect from the other tech giants this month?

From Apple with love: New iPads and iMacs?

It is widely speculated and reported that the Cupertino giant is slated to set another launch in the second half of October, just a month after they unveiled their newest generation of iPhones, their Apple Watch, and payment system Apple Pay.

Rumors now point to launching their newest line of iPads that will likely run with the same architecture as those of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, as well as Intel Haswell-powered iMacs and Macbooks, including a 27-inch Mac sporting a 5K resolution Retina display.

From the Google side: 2014 Nexus devices launching soon?

It’s been awhile since the search giant released a handset under the Nexus brand, the last being LG’s Nexus 5 last year. In the middle of the month, Google will be presenting the new Nexus 9 from HTC.  Codenamed Volantis, this 8.9-inch tablet packs an NVIDIA tegra K1 chipset and 2GB of RAM, among its specifications.

Meanwhile, its new flagship handet, the Nexus 6 (or Nexus X, or 2014 Nexus 5) smartphone made by Motorola, will be unveiled together with the Android L by the end of the month. Codenamed Shamu, the new phone will pack a bigger screen scaling at 5.9 inches, and comes with beefy specs. Would this be Google’s answer to the iPhone 6 Plus?

Nexus branded gadgets run an unskinned version of the latest Android operating system, and is frequently updated by Google themselves.

Android L on the road to release?

Google’s upcoming software may be on the road to release with its beta preview. Recent reports suggests that the release of the new dessert-flavored Android (reportedly named after Nestle’s Lion chocolate snack bar) is set to be officially released at the end of the month. While Google keeps mum on the official date Android L will be released, insider reports detail that the company is now in the finishing touches of the software.

Android L has been drastically improved by using ART  instead of the usual Dalvik runtime to accommodate 64-bit systems. The interface has also been redesigned according to Google’s new Material Design philosophy, and there is a more comprehensive battery history and management under Project Volta.

First working Project Ara coming this December, runs modified Android L

The people over at Phonebloks just updated their blog that says Google’s Project Ara is right on track for its January 2015 release. To show its progress, there’s going to be a second dev conference by the end of the year where a fully-functioning Ara phone prototype will make its very first appearance. It is also reported that it will be running a modified version of Android L.

Again, Project Ara is an upcoming customizable smartphone from Google that lets you interchange the components you want and need. It was reported that Toshiba will be making its processor, Sennheiser for the sound system, and should be selling at a starting price of about Php4,400. Each module can be bought through an online portal like Play Store.

The team will collaborate with Linaro in order to make the device run a modified version of Android L, Google’s next OS version for Android. Thanks to this, every module on the phone (batteries, camera, etc. Except CPU and display) can be removed and replaced without the need to turn off the device. As the year draws closer to its end, we can expect a rush of more exciting news from the company so stick around!

Android L to feature security encryption out of the box

Lazada Philippines

In light of recent government espionage and leakage of intimate photos of celebrities online, handset software companies are now upping the ante on security on their mobile phones. Apple started the privacy fight with a stronger encryption with iOS 8 encryption and two-factor iCloud, and now Google is following suit with Android L’s device encryption out of the box.

Starting next month, Google’s next-generation Android system will encrypt all data on the phone by default. “For over three years Android has offered encryption, and keys are not stored off of the device, so they cannot be shared with law enforcement,” Google spokeswoman Niki Christoff says. “As part of our next Android release, encryption will be enabled by default out of the box, so you won’t even have to think about turning it on.”

While Android may have offered encryption in its precedent versions, these were optional. These can be found under Settings > Security > Encrypt Phone. Fragmentation, or the existence of many different versions running on Android handsets worldwide, may also hinder the progress of users’ privacies running on outdated handsets, increasing their security risks.

Android L is Lion according to Nexus 5 (2014) leak

Lazada Philippines

Okay, let’s take a quick break from all the iPhone 6 noise and check out this leak for all the Android fans out there. According to a benchmark result, the upcoming Nexus phone could be the Nexus 5 (2014). In addition, the benchmark most likely revealed the next Android 5.0 version – Android Lion.

Previous rumors suggest that the next OS could be Lollipop, Lemon Cake, and even Lasagna. This has been the first time “Lion” came up on our radar. For those not familiar, there’s a candy bar from Nestle called Lion – just like KitKat. So it’s not that farfetched if Google will tread down this path and go with that OS name. We have previously reported on what to expect with Android 5.0 and you may also check out the UI comparison.

As for the new Nexus phone, it might not be known as the Nexus 6 or Nexus X but simply the 2014 edition Nexus 5. It’s still unclear what company will be making it as of now but the leaked benchmark tags along a list of specs.

Google Nexus 5 (2014) leaked specs:
5.2-inch Quad HD display @ 2560 x 1440 resolution
2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor
Adreno 420 GPU
3GB RAM
32GB storage
12MP rear camera
2MP front camera
GPS
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
NFC
Android 5.0 Lion

So how does a Quad HD Nexus phone running on Snapdragon 805 and Android 5.0 sound to your ears? Pretty sweet, eh?
