Google has just made official its latest OS version – the Android Lollipop 5.0. They’ve released a slew of improvements and at the same time introduced new functionalities. We picked our top 6 features and listed them down below. Let’s get to it.

6. Material Design

Kind of getting bored of the current look of Android? Material Design is Google’s new user interface which has been tweaked for a more enjoyable visual experience and more efficiency in navigation. The company promises vivid new colors, edge-to-edge imagery, and responsive UI design to aid users focus on their tasks. In addition, the Material Design’s look is kept across different platforms for when you want to continue your work from one device to another.

5. Notifications

With Android Lollipop, Google says that you can only get interrupted when you want to be as there are now more ways to personalize the notifications that you get. For example, they now have Priority mode that lets you put in specific contacts and make it a list of the only people you want to hear from. Users can also limit which apps can send notifications to hide sensitive content or other similar situation. Not only that, it also has a smarter method of ranking notifications based on who they’re from and what kind of notification was made (text, call, etc).

4. Device sharing

Left your Lollipop-powered device at home? Don’t worry cause you can still access your messages, call your contacts, and view digital files like photos by logging in on a different device running Android 5.0 as well. And just like how it’s done in the computer, you can have a guest profile so you could lend your friend your device, but not allow him to have access to your personal data.

3. Faster processing speed

As mentioned before, the arrival of the latest OS version brings with it better computing experience. The company’s new Android runtime, ART, boosts the application performance and responsiveness by up to 4x. Navigation was also said to be smoother in general even for tasks that require visually-rich elements. Multitasking is also encouraged as the team is confident it could handle that.

2. Longer battery life

No matter how good or advanced a smartphone is, it’s basically useless when it doesn’t have power to function. The new Android Lollipop has a new embedded feature that assures its users of up to 90 minutes of added battery power. During charging, it shows the estimated time left before the battery gets full, while it also displays the time left before your device gets completely juiced out! This way, users get to monitor their battery consumption.

We’ve recently heard about all the nude celebrity hacking so we can never be too sure with our personal data – this is why security is our top 1 in this list. As per Google, new devices running Android 5.0 automatically come with an encryption that shields the files when theft or anything similar happens. It is ready and armed against malwares while users may opt to go with Android Smart Lock for added protection.

Android L to feature security encryption out of the box

In light of recent government espionage and leakage of intimate photos of celebrities online, handset software companies are now upping the ante on security on their mobile phones. Apple started the privacy fight with a stronger encryption with iOS 8 encryption and two-factor iCloud, and now Google is following suit with Android L’s device encryption out of the box.

Starting next month, Google’s next-generation Android system will encrypt all data on the phone by default. “For over three years Android has offered encryption, and keys are not stored off of the device, so they cannot be shared with law enforcement,” Google spokeswoman Niki Christoff says. “As part of our next Android release, encryption will be enabled by default out of the box, so you won’t even have to think about turning it on.”

While Android may have offered encryption in its precedent versions, these were optional. These can be found under Settings > Security > Encrypt Phone. Fragmentation, or the existence of many different versions running on Android handsets worldwide, may also hinder the progress of users’ privacies running on outdated handsets, increasing their security risks.

Android L is Lion according to Nexus 5 (2014) leak

Okay, let’s take a quick break from all the iPhone 6 noise and check out this leak for all the Android fans out there. According to a benchmark result, the upcoming Nexus phone could be the Nexus 5 (2014). In addition, the benchmark most likely revealed the next Android 5.0 version – Android Lion.

Previous rumors suggest that the next OS could be Lollipop, Lemon Cake, and even Lasagna. This has been the first time “Lion” came up on our radar. For those not familiar, there’s a candy bar from Nestle called Lion – just like KitKat. So it’s not that farfetched if Google will tread down this path and go with that OS name. We have previously reported on what to expect with Android 5.0 and you may also check out the UI comparison.

As for the new Nexus phone, it might not be known as the Nexus 6 or Nexus X but simply the 2014 edition Nexus 5. It’s still unclear what company will be making it as of now but the leaked benchmark tags along a list of specs.

Android “L” UI compared against MIUI 6 on Xiaomi Mi 4

One of the most awaited announcements from Google is its new version of OS — now known only by the name Android L. We’ve reported before that it promises a significant boost in performance and even in battery life, but one of the most noticeable change is its layout. Here is a comparison from a thread at MIUI’s site of the awaited Android L against the new MIUI 6 that was just announced last week.

MIUI’s Lock Screen allows you to swipe up or left to launch Camera app. Android L adds sideways swipe that gives access to your dial pad.

MIUI 6 shows the number of notifications inside a circle. Android L, on the other hand, lets you reply directly to notifications with its “Smart Lock Screen”.

Tiled and flat are MIUI’s icons while Android L’s are cut-out and most are already familiar.

MIUI offers an entire frosted background to make the icons pop out more. Stock Android L limits the icons inside a window.

The notification bar of the MIUI 6 can accessed by swiping down anywhere on the screen. Users may swipe left and right to go to notification toggle.

With Android L swipe down once for the notification bar, twice for the notification toggle.

Still on a frosted background, MIUI’s Recent Apps can be viewed as apps or cards. Swipes up to close.

This is Android L’s Recent Apps function that swipes sideways to close card-like apps.

Icons for MIUI are uniquely animated – tiles have shadows when you move them, they shake like in iOS, and have “firework” effects when you delete them.

Animation for Android L are seen while setting options and on Recent Apps.

From what we can see, MIUI 6′s interface is going after an iOS look. Partner that with the Mi 4′s display and we’re looking at colorful tiles on a Full HD resolution. Android L, however, still keeps its classic appeal but definitely with some tweaks. Both look very easy to navigate around with and are aesthetically pleasing in their own ways.
