Microsoft Philippines, yesterday, launched two new Windows 10-powered devices that will soon be available in store shelves. Microsoft Lumia 950 hands-on, first encounter

Aside from the Lumia 950 XL, Microsoft also launched its smaller sibling, the Lumia 950, in the Philippines yesterday. Both are Lumia flagships leading the Windows 10 revolution in mobile.

The Lumia 950 is a candybar smartphone with 5.2″ AMOLED display with a resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels or simply QHD. That results to an extremely sharp 564ppi quality. The ClearBlack technology is also onboard, thus further enriching the already pleasing AMOLED panel. If you’re already a user of Windows Phone 8, you’d know that the OS benefits well with deep blacks due to the UX of the platform.

The right side of the device houses the physical buttons of the smartphone — the volume rocker and the power/lock button. Flipping to the back will reveal the 20-megapixel PureView camera with Zeiss optics. Nokia’s imaging prowess has been turned over well with Microsoft and the imaging department should be really good. There’s also a triple-LED flash to illuminate or correct the lighting of the scene.

Running the show here is a Snapdragon 808 hexa-core chipset plus 3GB of RAM. While it may not have the liquid-cooling feature of the 950 XL, heating issues shouldn’t pose a threat with the chipset. Also, the polycarbonate body of the device would help in keeping the 950 cool on hand. Speaking of the body, polycarbonate shells for a flagship is really not the thing nowadays. OEMs have been shifting to premium aluminum or a fashionable leather option, although Microsoft did a good job in giving the smartphone a premium feel on hand despite the lack of the cold touch.

Overall, the Lumia 950 looks to be a worthy smaller flagship together with the 950 XL based on our first encounter. The Php 28,990 price tag is also a decent introductory price for the smartphone. Like the bigger Lumia, the 950 can also be used with the Microsoft Display Dock to enable the Continuum feature and use the device as a desktop-like productivity computer. The Display Dock will be available for purchase for Php 3,330 with availability on December 14th together with the two recently launched Windows 10 smartphones.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL hands-on, first impressions

Microsoft has just officially announced their new flagship Windows 10 smartphones in the Philippines and leading the pack is the Lumia 950 XL along with the Microsoft Display Dock that enables the device to become a desktop-like productivity machine.

The Lumia 950 XL sports a 5.7″ QHD AMOLED display that looks wonderful during our short encounter with the device at the launch. Like most Windows smartphones today, the navigation bar at the bottom takes some screen real estate but thanks to the AMOLED and the ClearBlack technology, it has deep blacks and the whole display is less reflective from harsh light. The only physical buttons found on the device are the volume rocker and power lock key which are both located on the right side.

As brought to our attention, the Lumia 950 XL has a nifty liquid cooling feature going inside, keeping the Snapdragon 810 chipset at optimum temperature even during heavy usage. Also, Microsoft decided to give a polycarbonate body to ensure cooler operation as aluminum tends add heat on the device. And, we’re glad that the polycarbonate used here is of premium quality.

Being the greatest among Windows 10 smartphones, the 950 XL can stretch productivity by plugging it to the Microsoft Display Dock. This will now turn the smartphone into functioning desktop-like PC anytime, anywhere. Well, as long as you have a monitor available and a wireless keyboard around. The feature is also available to its smaller brother, the Lumia 950.

The dock has multiple USB 2.0 ports, so you can use your already-owned wireless accessories or even plug-in a USB stick for reading and transfer. You can use the installed Universal apps on your smartphone, like Office, as they are compatible for the Continuum feature. What’s best about the Continuum is the ability to really multitask as it allows you to separately use the smartphone while it is docked. For now, not all apps are supported but as Windows 10 continues to be updated, developers will have more useful apps in the near future.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL will retail for Php 32,990 while the Display Dock is sold separately for Php 3,390. You can expect these devices, along with the Lumia 950, by December 14 through Microsoft Authorized Reseller Stores and Nokia Stores nationwide.
