Samsung announces mass production of 256GB UFS 2.0 storage

Samsung Electronics has announced that is now mass producing the industry’s first 256GB mbedded memory based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for high-end mobile devices.

According to Samsung, the new high-density UFS memory module offers speeds that are nearly twice as fast as a SATA SSD for PCs. It can handle “up to 45,000 and 40,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reading and writing respectively, over two times faster than the 19,000 and 14,000 IOPS of the previous generation of UFS memory.”

In addition, it’s extremely compact (smaller than a microSD card) and can transfer data up to 850MB/s, with a sequential write speed of up to 260MB/s, making it easier for mobile devices to handle large files such as 4K videos.

To date, the most common largest internal storage capacity in smartphones is 128GB. With the said new memory chips, you can expect future flagship smartphones to carry 256GB of internal storage, perfect for media heavy users.
