PH Ranks Close to Last in LTE Coverage at 39%

In addition to having one of the slowest LTE speed in the world, OpenSignal’s recent report also show that the Philippines is tied with Ecuador for having the second worst LTE coverage among other countries that were on the list.

Instead of just measuring the geographical reach of a particular service provider, OpenSignal defines LTE Coverage, or Time Coverage to be exact, as a metric that measures the coverage as a whole, including the time subscribers have LTE signal whether they are indoors, outdoors, stationary or on the move.

Based on OpenSignal’s findings, Smart Communications got a 36% LTE Coverage which put the MVP-owned telco 173rd spot in the global ranking. Globe Telecoms, on the other hand, fared a tad better than its rival, securing the 161st spot in the global ranking with an LTE Coverage of 41%.

When combined, the Philippines have an average LTE Coverage of 39% which, as mentioned earlier, is the second to worst in all of the countries on the list. The only country has worse average LTE Coverage is Sri Lanka which had 38-percent.

Filipino Nurse Jailed in Singapore for Derogatory Facebook Post

Ello Ed Munsell Bello, a Filipino nurse who previously worked at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, was sentenced to a total of four months in prison for a derogatory post on his Facebook account.

Bello was arrested earlier in April for the Facebook post above dated in January. The arrest was followed by an investigation in which Bello denied being guilty of the accusation and stated that his Facebook account was hacked and he was not the one who posted the insults on social media.

Later on, however, he admitted to the crime and was sentenced to 3 months in prison for one count of sedition under Singapore’s Sedition Act and two charges of providing false information to the investigators in three different occasions.

In a statement, State Courts Judge Siva Shanmugam said that “the accused’s provocative conduct, if left unchecked, could possibly result in discrimination against the innocent and law-abiding minority Filipino residents in Singapore.”

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Charles Jose agrees with the courts’ decision stating that “Bello’s penalty was appropriate for the gravity of charges.”

Pebble has launched the latest member of its growing smartwatch family, the Pebble Time Round. Unlike the other smartwatches that came before it, the Time Round looks more like a typical timepiece thanks to its rounded, all-metal design.

Apart from veering away from its traditional square design, Pebble has also made their new smartwatch thinner (7.5 mm) and lighter (28 grams), claiming the title as the world’s thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the process.

Other features of the new Pebble Time Round include some degree of resistance against water splash, battery life that’s rated for two days, and support for quick charging which allows users to use the smartwatch for a full day only after charging it for 15 minutes.

Inventec Confirms Xiaomi Notebook, Due in 2016

Richard Lee, the CEO of Inventec, has confirmed to reporters that Xiaomi is indeed working on its first notebook PC which is expected to make its debut in the first or second quarter of 2016.

The confirmation that Lee recently made coincides with the previous rumors about a Xiaomi-made laptop. At the time of writing, Xiaomi remains tight-lipped about its plan of entering the portable computer segment, thus details about the hardware is scarce.

Inventec, particularly its subsidiary Inventec Appliances Corporation, have worked with Xiaomi in the past, handling the assembly of Xiaomi’s smartphones and tablets.

Lee is optimistic about the upcoming project, saying that “I am upbeat about the business outlook for Xiaomi’s notebook computers, as the firm has more than 200 million registered smartphone users”. He added that although he’s uncertain that the business model that Xiaomi has on its mobile device lineup will carry over to its new venture, he believes that Xiaomi will bring “something new to the market”.
