Cirque du Soleil Saltimbanco Manila
We were at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay last Thursday for the premiere of Cirque du Soleil Saltimbanco Manila.
Saltimbanco – from the Italian “saltare in banco”, meaning “to jump on a bench” is Cirque du Soleil’s longest-running touring show and is in Manila for ten days of artistic acrobatic entertainment and we were lucky enough to be invited.
The show started at 8 p.m. sharp. We were seated at the Lower Box where we have the best view of the entire stage. Before the show started, the characters interacted with the audiences and warmed up with some clown acts. There were a number of funny clown acts during the show, highlighted by Eddie the clown’s performance (removed texts <spoiler>)
Cirque du Soleil is known for its highly extravagant production and Saltimbanco lived up to that brand. The visuals and colors are overwhelming – the beautiful costumes, the lights, the choreography and timing are flawless. The performers made it look really easy even when performing complex acrobatics. The show was highly entertaining and the music was really great, sometimes I have to stop watching the acrobats for seconds to find the lead singer or band’s soloist play.
I lost count of the number of acrobatic acts but I do remember some acts that acts left us holding our breath for seconds. It was great watching the acro dancers, contortionists, pole climbers (these guys climb and play around the poles like ninjas, bet it left a lot of pole dancers in awe ) and jugglers but my favorites were the russian swing (where they send the acrobats tumbling in the air), bungee (high into the air balancing, swinging, flying and dropping), acrobalance / hand-to-hand (amazing strength, that is) and trapeze.
There was never a dull moment and even after a couple of hours’ performance I was still wanting for more.
The show ran from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with a 20 minute break and yep, you cannot take photos during the performance.
Saltimbanco by Cirque du Soleil in Manila will be performing from August 9 – 19, 2012 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

COLT 45 BRINGS THRASH METAL LEGEND MEGADETH TO MANILA THIS JULY 29th AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER
To simply dub Megadeth as “one of the best heavy metal bands in the world” would still be selling this legendary four-piece of musicians short, considering that the list of both the band’s achievements and contributions is getting longer by the day, with a career spanning more than two decades from their formation in 1983.
With over 30 million albums sold worldwide, 13 studio albums, nearly 30 hit singles, 32 music videos and 10 Grammy Award nominations under their belt, Filipino fans have been waiting for this landmark event in Philippine music history for decades.Colt 45 answers the growing clamor for the heavy metal legends as it brings Megadeth to the country in a high-octane concert this July 29th at the World Trade Center Hall D in Pasay City.
“We are very proud and excited to bring in one of the world’s greatest heavy metal acts,” says Asia Brewery Beer Marketing Manager Greg Anonas. “Just like their gritty, hard rock sound, Colt 45ushers in a bolder drinking experience with its new formulation that combines superior strength, taste, aroma and balance. It’s an experience that can only come from the country’s first premium roasted malt and triple hops-brewed beer.”
Giving hardcore Megedeth fans the chance to jam with the earth-shaking band, Colt 45 also launched an exciting promo that offered big discounts on concert tickets. Those who presented ten crowns of Colt 45 at SM Ticket offices enjoyed a whopping P1,000 off on ticket prices. Through the promo, even more fans are set to take part in the biggest rock event of the year.
Heavy metal pioneer
Hailing from Los Angeles, California and formed by founding member Dave Mustaine, Megadeth is considered worldwide as one of the pioneering bands of the American Thrash Metal movement together with their “Big Four” contemporaries Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. The top bands were responsible for creating, developing and popularizing the genre and influencing a countless number of bands in their wake. For most fans of thrash metal, Megadeth was –and still is – the finest and technically proficient of the four, its music characterized with oft-times fast-paced rhythms, dizzying tempo shifts and distinctively intricate lead guitar playing.
Guitarist/chief songwriter Mustaine, one of the most important figures in thrash metal, has worked with an impressive roster of musicians through the years, including accomplished musicians such as the late, great Dimebag Darrell (of Pantera and Damageplan fame) and Slayer’s Kerry King (during Megadeth’s formative years) and guitarists Chris Poland, Marty Friedman and Al Pitrelli, as well as drummers Nick menza and Vinnie Colaiuta. Currently, Megadeth’s roster can be considered as a heavy metal super group of sorts, as original bassist Dave Ellefson, drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist extraordinaire Chris Broderick have proven themselves to be the most potent lineup yet.
Behind such landmark metal albums such as 1986’s Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying, 1990’s Rust In Peace, 1992’sCountdown To Extinction, 1998’s Cryptic Writings and the more recent Endgame (2009) and 2011’s Thirteen, Megadeth: Live In Manila is definitely the biggest, most-awaited heavy metal event of the year, as old and new fans alike, are expected to go crazy in the mosh pits and scream-along thrash metal anthems like “Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?” “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due,” “Hangar 18,” “Symphony of Destruction,” “Reckoning Day,” and “Trust,” amongst its extensive hit-list for nearly two hours of heavy metal mayhem.
The most explosive rock event for the real man
Presented by PULP Live Productions and Colt 45, Megadeth: Live in Manila is set to heat up the local music scene with a one-of-a-kind rock experience fit for the man’s man.Just like country’s most-anticipated rock concert, Colt 45 captures the same adrenaline-pumping experience with its all-new formulation that features a combination of outstanding beer hops such as magnum for flavor, hallertau for aroma, and nugget to balance it all out.
Delivering the perfect chemistry between the three hops, Colt 45 boasts of premium roasted malt to deliver outstanding taste and flavor to suit today’s most discerning beer drinkers. Along with its 7.2% alcohol volume, Colt 45 presents the strongest beer in the market that offers the strongest hit, top-not taste, and the best drinking experience real men can enjoy.
Watch out for even more exciting events and concerts only from the all-new, reformulated Colt 45, the strongest beer for the real man.
