Binuatan Creations, Palawan

It’s a fact: I am always fascinated with locally made handicrafts. And I cant help but buy a few items when I found one.

And just recently i found myself scouring for the finest table runners and placemats at Binuatan Crafts in Puerto Princesa Palawan.

Binuatan has been weaving mats and make them into bags and other stuff for the last thirteen years. They pride themselves in creating masterpieces using locally available tikog and amumuting grass. These grasses are harvested in nearby communities dried and dyed depending on the color preference.

Once done, weaved mats are then made into other pasalubong items like table runner, placemats, handbags, cellphone and tablet sleeve, window blinds keychains and a whole lot more.

Their finished products are also on display at the showroom jusg beside the weaving center. The showroom opened in 2005 has been one of the top pasalubong shops when in Palawan.

Binuatan Crafts also accepts credit and debit card payments just in case you forgot to bring enough cash.

Revisiting Palawan, the World’s Best Island

Summer is just around the corner. One would slowly notice that the day is getting longer than the night, and the temperature is slowly rising.

And as a prelude to the much-awaited summer break, I flew to Palawan courtesy of Air Asia Philippines.

During the 4-day junket, we witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of agreement between the provincial government of Palawan, the Palawan Tourism Council and Air Asia Philippines. The agreement launches the Palawan World’s Best tourism campaign with Air Asia as its official airline partner.

Together with other invited media, I got to revisit some of Palawan’s already – established tourist spots as well as its secret gems.

During our first day we got to visit Splash House. this aquaculture facility is located just a quick 5-minute boat ride from the port. Its is on the same port where tourists would normally flock for the more popular Honda Bay Island hopping tour.

At the splash house, they breed several lobsters, groupers, and milkfish. And the best part of going the the Splash House? You get to witness thousands of fruit bats fly from the nearby island back to mainland Palawan.

“It’s a daily phenomenon one must experience while in Palawan!” exclaimed Monica Mitra, chief operating officer of Splash House.

After our brief encounter with the wildlife we traveled north to experience the best of Palawan. The crême dela crême of all beach destinations: El Nido.

I can recall my last visit to El Nido in 2009, majority of the tourists then were Russians trying to escape the harsh cold climate in their country. But after Survivor France or locally known as Koh Lanta was aired, Statistics have greatly changed. Today most of the foreigners you get to see in El Nido are either French-speaking, or hailed from France.

The continuous influx of European tourists is just a testament that Palawan is indeed one of the “World’s Best Island”.

11051849_10153203356606457_8706393864490700804_n

During our third day in the province we got to sample the best of El Nido. We did a customized tour. We got to visit the small lagoon and the big lagoon, our lunch was at Dibuluan Island care of El Nido resorts. The island is just so serene. With very fine white sand beach and turquoise waters perfect for the summer swim.

Our final stop for the whole day island hopping tour was at the Ipil Beach. Upon arrival we were welcomed with snacks and fresh buko juice by Miss Bong Romero, of Ipil Suites Puerto Princesa and El Nido.

And our final stop for the junket before flying back to Manila is at La Terrasse for dinner. This French-inspired restaurant serves nothing but the best of Palawan. We had ceviche, bread sticks with pesto on the side, duck confit steamed tilapia and to cap it off we had the Palaweño Brewery craft beer. I samPled the Ayahay Palaweño Honey Kolsch. It was so good with a slight hint of pineapple. Not a hint of bitterness unlike i n most commercially-produced beers.

11046928_10153203360406457_3310528141847061144_n

Palaweño Brewery boasts as the first and only producer of craft beer in Palawan. And they have a brewey tour too! It’s something that I should look forward to when I get back to the World’s Best Island next time.

SPINNR named best music app at Mobile World Congress

SPINNR, a music service introduced by wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), was named the “Best Mobile Music App” by the prestigious GSMA telecoms industry association at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The app, which kick-started the music streaming revolution in the Philippines, won at the GSMA’s 20th Global Mobile Awards which is dubbed the “Oscars” of the mobile industry. SPINNR was recognized among other nominees like Samsung’s Milk Music, Universal Music’s The Kleek, Bharti Airtel’s Wynk, and the Radio Sawa app.

Launched in 2013, SPINNR is the only music app that combines premium ad-free streaming with song purchases and free radio service, all for as low as P2.50 a day and with no data charges. Unlike other digital music stores, SPINNR lets Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular subscribers pay for music downloads or streaming conveniently, through prepaid load deductions or charging to their postpaid bill – no credit cards or special accounts needed.

SPINNR received judges’ praise for being a multiplatform app with “a proven track record in driving subscriptions in the Philippines, thanks to a bite-sized revenue model with carrier billing in a low credit card user base environment.”

SPINNR is part of the PLDT Group’s suite of content services that have spurred the growth of mobile Internet revenues by 63% to P8.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2014. Mobile Internet usage increased by 167% to 48,329 Terabytes year-on-year.

“Our warmest congratulations to all the winners of the 20th Global Mobile Awards,” said GSMA chief executive officer John Hoffman. “Our winners are in the esteemed company of the mobile innovators, pioneers, and leaders that have won these coveted awards over the last two decades, many of whom have been game-changers in transforming the way that the world communicates.”

The GSMA is a renowned global association of mobile operators, device makers, software companies, equipment providers, and Internet companies. This year’s Global Mobile Awards received more than 800 “high-caliber” entries, judged by more than 300 independent experts, analysts, journalists, and academics.

“We are happy that our homegrown SPINNR app has been recognized as the top mobile music app in the world. Just a few years ago, Filipinos were not very familiar about the concept of music streaming. By giving users the total music experience through streaming, exclusive merchandise, and the hottest music events, SPINNR has revolutionized the way Filipinos enjoy and experience music through their mobile phones,” said Mellissa Limcaoco, head of Smart’s innovation and product development group.

Having established partnerships with the biggest music labels – Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Universal Records – SPINNR owns the exclusive rights to use and distribute in the country their entire library of digital content which includes millions of local and international hits spanning different genres. Sometimes, SPINNR even releases singles and albums a week before they become available in physical stores.

The brand is present in the biggest concerts such as Taylor Swift’s Red Tour, and offers exclusive promos, merchandise, and meet-and-greet opportunities to its users. By promoting paid music services and artist interaction, SPINNR joins the fight against music piracy and protects the artists’ right to earn from their craft.

SPINNR is available as a free downloadable app on Android phones and iPhones, and can be accessed by other internet-capable gadgets like tablets, laptops, and desktops via www.spinnr.ph. Users can log in using their Smart, Talk ‘N Text, or Sun Cellular account or their Facebook account.

The GSMA award is the latest commendation for the rapidly growing music service. Last year, SPINNR won the Best Content Service recognition from the Asia Communication Awards, and was named by the Boston consulting group JANA as the top music streaming app used by Filipinos.

This is also not the first time for Smart to win at the Global Mobile Awards. Last year, the company’s disaster preparedness and emergency response program called SafePH was named “Best Use of Mobile in Emergency or Humanitarian Situations.” The GSMA cited Smart specifically for its quick network restoration and emergency response efforts in the aftermath of Supertyphoon Yolanda.
