If you think your sparkling new 4K UHD television has all the pixels to support anything, think again. NHK Japan has just started to test broadcast its “Super Hi-Vision” channel where it will show 8K content.
Yup, you read it right. 8K broadcasting has just started in the land of the rising sun. 8K resolution is 7680 x 4320 pixels or four times than 4K and sixteen times than Full HD. To top that, it also supports 22.2-channel audio.
8K content on the schedule includes a J-pop concert, footages of a famed Japanese conductor in a Beethoven concert, and highlights from the previous London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. There will be mixed 4K programs since the availability of 8K content is scarce as of now. The broadcast is from 10AM to 5PM. Since no-one has the proper TV and equipment to receive the signal, NHK is installing viewing stations across Japan for the public to enjoy. The Rio Olympics will also be showcased when the content becomes available.
NHK started to broadcast in HD back in 1989 and has demonstrated 8K in 2002. So, broadcasting in 8K while Full HD TVs are the norm and 4K UHD TVs are just starting to make a dent is just them being miles ahead.
