From sophisticated computing devices to mundane objects that has been infused with wireless connectivity, there’s no denying that the Internet of Things (IoT) is slowly becoming a trend in the modern world, and is projected to grow exponentially to about 100 billion in the next decade.
But instead of coming up with their own IoT hardware, Huawei is taking a different route by recently unveiling a lightweight operating system called LiteOS.
Just 10 kilobytes in size, LiteOS is dubbed as the “world’s most lightweight IoT OS”. The company speaks highly of their new IoT OS saying that despite its small footprint, it supports “zero configuration, auto-discovery, and auto-networking.”
In an interview with the Financial Times, William Xu, Huawei’s global head of strategy and marketing, stated that the company is more interested in providing the platform in which IoT devices can communicate (LiteOS) to other devices rather than making an actual IoT device. He added that LiteOS is solely intended for IoT devices. As such, it will not go toe-to-toe with other mobile OS like Android or iOS.
During the launching event, Huawei announced that the LiteOS will be open to all developers once it becomes available.
