Along with the Windows 10 updates and the announcement of the new Project Spartan browser, Microsoft forays into the full-field augmented reality segment of the market with the launch of the HoloLens, powered by Microsoft’s Windows Holographic software.
Microsoft HoloLens is touted as the first fully untethered holographic computer, and is equipped with see-thru, high-definition lenses, spatial sound, and advanced sensors. To make up most of the holographic experience, the Redmond giant added a third processor it calls the HPU, or Holographic Processing Unit, enabling a more seamless visual experience.
Users can also create their own 3D images in minutes using the built-in Holo Studio software. During the press conference, Microsoft demonstrated creating a virtual drone, to which they printed out in 3D.
Netflix, Minecraft, and a holographic version of Skype are among the first programs to arrive at the newest Microsoft hardware. It is expected to arrive into stores “somewhere along the Windows 10 timeline.”
