After showcasing the new Android Wear, Google transitioned to Android Auto, a platform that’s similar to Google Now, but is more geared towards improving the overall user experience of a driver while they’re inside their car.
Android Auto is the fruition of the Open Automotive Alliance that the search giant launched in partnership with distinguished car makers during the early part of the year.
The main goal for the Android Auto is to allow drivers to get the information that they need, when they need it, without having to take their hands off the wheel or peel their eyes away from the road.
This is made possible through voice-activated controls similar to how Google Now works. With Android Auto, users can search for places using Google Maps and even reply to incoming messages (both SMS and Email) using their own voice.
Android Auto will be launched alongside Android L. In addition, consumers can expect cars with Android Auto installed within this year, although it wasn’t mentioned which among the 40 car manufacturers will release it first.
