In several news reports about the recent investigations regarding webcam sextortion, the Philippines has once again claimed another title, this time as the Sextortion Capital of the World.
This is on top of the current titles the country already like Social Media Capital and Selfie Capital.
“Sextortion is a form of sexual exploitation that employs non-physical forms of coercion to extort sexual favors from the victim.”
The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) in cooperation with other international agencies like the Interpol and the FBI made joint operations to raid several shops in Naga City, Legazpi City, Laguna, Bulacan, Taguig City and many other cities across the country.
These shops or small-time “call centers” are used to lure people into having webcam sex and record their videos and photos to be blackmailed later on if they do not pay a huge sum.
In a recent report from Inquirer, the suicide of 17-year-old British mechanic Daniel Perry in July last year led police to an international cybercrime syndicate based in the Philippines, and the eventual arrest of 58 people allegedly involved in “sextortion,” the Philippine National Police said on Friday.
Victims come from various countries like the United Kingdom, United States, Scotland, Hong Kong and Singapore.
