Samsung’s new Galaxy Gear ain’t the only digital wristband that’s making quite a splash in this year’s IFA in Berlin, Germany as Qualcomm also unveiled its very own SmartWatch/companion watch called Toq (pronounced as Tok).
Compared to Samsung, Qualcomm has taken a more conservative approach in creating their smartwatch; a substance-over-style/feature ideology if you may. As such, what the Toq may lack in additional functionalities like a camera found on the Galaxy Gear, it compensates for better mileage as implied by the inclusion of Qualcomm’s power-efficient display technology called Mirasol.
Some of the other advantages that Toq has Sammy’s companion watch include water-resistant design, wireless charging support and the ability to connect to any Android device running on Ice Cream Sandwich or above.
Apart from the telling the time, Toq also offers the same set of functionalities that we’ve seen on other smartwatches in the past such as manage incoming calls and notifications, read SMS and control music playback.
According to Qualcomm, Toq will come in two colors (black and white) and can be bundled with a wireless Bluetooth headset for an additional fee. The firm remains mum on its retail price but chip manufacturer claims that shipment should begin on the last quarter of this year.
